She was born March 30, 1926, in New Castle, Ind., earned a de- gree from Christian College, Co- lumbia, Mo., and attended Indi- ana University, Bloomington, Ind. She had been an active mem- ber of the Wilkes-Barre Junior League, the Wyoming Valley United Way and the American Cancer Society. Surviving are her husband, George M. He was a nose gunner in the U.S. Air Force, was shot down in Czechoslovakia and missing in action for four months. He was employed as a records searcher for the FBI in Washington, D.C. Surviving are his sister, Gla- dys Burkhardt Raphael, of Sha- vertown; wife, Elaine Burkhardt; and daughters, Janet Burton and Brenda Perry, Silver Spring, Md.; nieces and nephews. BURNS - John J., 95, of Har- veys Lake, died Friday, April 15, 2011. He was born May 27, 1915, in Wilkes-Barre, was a graduate of Coughlin High School and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was employed for many years by the former Internation- al Color Printing Co., Parsons. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church, Harveys Lake. She served as Justice of the Peace in Wyom- ing County and was active in the Back Mountain Counsel of Girl Scouts, running the local Noxen troop. DEVLIN - James C., 91, of Sha- vertown, ‘died Thursday, April 14, 2011, in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. He was born in Kingston, was the owner/operator of Graphic Arts Services Inc., of Wilkes- Barre, for 45 years. A resident of Shavertown for 60 years, he was a member of St. Therese’s Church and a former member of its choir. Surviving are sons, James F., East Stroudsburg; John C., Cen tral; and Jerome FE. DICK - Marguerite, 76, of Tunkhannock, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, died Sunday, April 17, 2011, in Mercy Special Care Hospital, Nanticoke. He was born in New York City, N.Y., resided for most of her adult life in Wilkes-Barre and in the Tunkhannock area for the past nine months. She had been employed by TWA, New York, N.Y., for several years. She worked as clerk for Fowler, Dick & Walker, The Bos- ton Store, Wilkes-Barre. She had also been employed by First Eastern Bank and PNC Bank, Wilkes-Barre branches, Ameri- can Red Cross, Wilkes-Barre, and Greenwald & Berk Insur- ance Company, Kingston. She was an active volunteer for numerous area cancer groups and was a member of First Church of Christ, Wilkes-Barre. Meyers High School, class of 1982, and Luzerne County Community College. Employed by the Wilkes-Barre Area School District for 25 years, he was head custodian at the dis- trict administration building. He served as vice-president of the Lake-Lehman School Board and as a member of the Joint Oper- ating Committee of the West Side Career and Technology Center. He was first vice-president of the Harveys Lake Lions Club, Chaplain of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 967, PSEA Union Shop Steward and a communicant at Our Lady of Victory Church. HOOVER - Kenneth E., 85, of Harveys Lake, died Monday, April 18, 2011, at Hospice Com- munity Care Inpatient Unit of Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, after several weeks of illness. He was born in Avoca and re-, tired in 1984 from Acme Ware- house, Forty Fort. He also worked as claims manager for Dean Phipps Stores Inc. Ware- = Member FDIC house, Avoca, and served as Deputy Game Protector, Forest Fire Warden and as Pittston Township police officer. He was a member of Fellowship Evan- gelical Free Church, Dallas. He was born December 9, 1939, and graduated from Ply- mouth High School, class of 1957. After overcoming polio, he went on to graduate from Wilkes College and Bucknell University. He was a dedicated teacher for 38 years, starting at Lake-Leh- man High School, then Kingston School District and eventually Wyoming Valley West High School where he taught History, Civics, Economics and Sociolo- gy. He coached Little League baseball, was a Hunter Safety In- structor for the PA Game Com- mission and a rifle instructor for the Wyoming Valley West Rifle Team. He was a deacon and su- perintendent at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Plymouth and most recently attended the Inde- pendent Bible Church, Duryea. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Valeria L. Mundy Jenkins; sons, Dale T. and Daniel B., Har- risburg; brother, Thomas E., Shavertown,; five nieces, four ne- phews, eight great-nieces and four great-nephews. JOHNSON - Robert I., of Stoney Mountain Road, Tunk- hannock, a guest at Ann’s Grove in Sugar Hollow, died Friday, April 8, 2011, at Mercy Tyler Hospital in Tunkhannock. He was born in Tunkhannock on June 26, 1925, and was a 30- year veteran of the US. Army, retiring as a master sergeant. While in World War II, he took part in the invasion of Utah Beach and served under General Patton in the Battle of the Bulge. He also served in the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. Surviving are his wife, Huisuk Kim Johnson; a son, Robert Jr., of Tunkhannock; a brother, Frank, of Pennsylvania. She was employed as a house cleaner for friends and family in both Brooklyn and the Bronx, New York City, N.Y. She also worked as an aide in the Shamo- kin Hospital, the former Retreat State Hospital, Hunlock Creek, in the former Shickshinny Jacket Factory and the Sweet Valley Dress Factory. She was a member of the Sweet Valley Church of Christ and was an honorary member of the Sweet Valley Volunteer Fire Co. TEMPRINE - Sister Mary Domitilla Temprine, RSM, a member of the Mid-Atlantic community of the Sisters of Mer- cy, died on Friday, April 8, 2011, at Mercy Center, Dallas. The former Helen Temprine, she was born March 30, 1909, in Larksville, received her elemen- tary and secondary education at St. Vincent School, Plymouth and graduated from St. Vincent High School in 1927. She entered the sisters of Mer- cy in September 1927 and made her profession of vows on Au- gust 16, 1930. She earned a bachelor of degree from Misericordia Uni- versity, Dallas, the College Mi- sericordia with majors in En- glish and Latin in 1936. She taught in the parochial grade schools for a total of 44 years in the Dioceses of Scran- ton, Allentown, Harrisburg, Rockville Centre, N.Y. and Brooklyn, N.Y. At Mercy Center, she assisted as a receptionist for the Mercy Institute for Educational Devel- opment (MIED) until entering full time into the prayer minis- try.
