CHAMPION Blackhawks The Back Mountain Black- hawks won the Casey Classic and, two months later, captured the varsity division of the North East Pennsylvania Area Scholas- tic Hockey League. Back Mountain, Crestwood, Holy Redeemer, Paupack, Pitt- ston Area, Scranton, Susquehan- na Valley, Wyoming Area and Wyoming Valley West school dis- tricts all participate in the varsity division. After completing the season, fourth-seeded Back Mountain faced fifth-seeded Scranton Area, shutting it out, 2-0, to move on in the playoffs. The next round had Back Mountain facing off against No. 1 seed Crestwood and Back Moun- tain came away with a victory, on- ly after surviving overtime and a double shootout for an exciting semi-final game. On the other side, seventh- seeded Pittston Area upset Valley West and Paupack, the second and third place teams, respective- ly, to advance to the finals. In the final match of the sea- son, Back Mountain held nothing back. Senior Blake Howat started the scoring with an assist from Ryan Hogan and Ryan Hartman just 47 seconds into the game. A minute later, John Yenchak scored from an assist by Lewis Hackling. Hogan followed with a goal of his own assisted by Yenchak and Kenny Burkhart. Further assists were provided by Logan Obes and Ryan Rynkiewicz as Howat completed a hat trick while Da- vid Payne and Casey McAndrew lit up the pipes for three addition- al goals. Goalie Sean Jenkins was solid in net, stopping 36 of Pittston’s shots to give Back Mountain an 8-3 victory. DHS DIVERS COMPETE AT STATES TEAM IS TOURNAMENT CHAMPION Two Dallas High School divers traveled to Bucknell University to compete in the PIAA State Championships on March 16-17. The divers earned spots in the state tournament following their showings at the District 2 Class AA Championships. Sarah Zerfoss, a junior, placed first at the district meet with a score of 373.35 while senior Michael Stec placed first with a score of 423.50. The Kapow India field hockey team recently participated in the 201 USA Field Hockey Nation- al Indoor Tournament in Virginia Beach, Virginia, going undefeated in its pool and not allowing a goal in seven games.
