ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT HARVEYS LAKE RESIDENTS Community Protection From Natural Gas Extraction Ordinance As you may be aware, a group of concerned citizens of the Borough have proposed adoption of an ordinance drawn up by the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF) of Cham; bersburg, PA. After several attempts to convince Harveys Lake Borough Council to advertise t ordinance and hold a public meeting to discuss its merits, the Council agreed to do so by a 3-2 vote at the last Council meeting: The public hearing is scheduled for March 15, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Harveys Lake Municipal Building. This ordinance is the most effective method to protect our Borough from the dangers that the gas drilling industry would inflict on our community, including drinking water contamination, air quality issues, excessive noise, decrease in property values and damage to our infrastructure. The ordinance affirms our inherent local governing authority, our right to a healthy environ- ment, specifically bans any corporation from extracting natural gas within the Borough, prohibits the extraction of water from any source for use in extraction of subsurface natural gas and holds corporations engaging in natural gas extraction in neighboring municipalities liable for all harm | caused to natural water sources within the Borough of Harveys Lake. Our Council members have expressed several legitimate concerns regarding adoption of this Or- dinance, which will be addressed at the March 15th hearing. It is imperative that our local elected representatives are made aware that their constituents demand they protect our Borough from the dangers of gas drilling industrial activity. We will be conducting a borough-wide canvassing to secure signatures on a petition that will make it clear that we, the people, expect them to enact this ordinance. We will begin this week- is available in the Boroudh secretary’s office for your review, and canvassers will also provide a 1 CODY, : If the canvassers are not able to contact you, please email nturner@epix.net and we will forward the full ordinance text and arrange a meeting at your convenience to explain the ordinance, nd ask for your signature on the petition. Boe Please make every effort to attend the hearing. Community involvement is essential and we need as many people there as possible.
