Students representatives are, from left, first row, Sarah Munley, Vernon, N.J.; and Jen Kates, Wilkes-Barre. Second row, Ashley Benz, Philadelphia; Anthony Powell, Lansford; and Whitney Rohm, of Bloomsburg, prepare to the deliver the collected items to 101 adopted families. Feeding a need The Misericordia University Campus Ministry’s “Adopt A Family” program provided Thanksgiving food for 101 area families. Approximately 2,000 food items were collected, total- ing more than $6,000. Because of an increased need this year, the number of bagged items collect- ed exceeded 2009’s total by 30. “The response from the cam- pus, as well as the community, has been overwhelming,” said project coordinator Kristen Mitchell Samuels, community outreach coordinator for Miser- icordia University. “We started this project two years ago and proudly fed 32 families for Thanksgiving the first year and more than 70 last year. The spirit of mercy at Misericordia really took hold this year and today we have enough support to feed 101 families. We've had a variety of groups, from sports teams to resi- dence halls, as well as individual staff and faculty members sup- port the effort.” Each group was responsible for raising the money or collecting the items for a holiday food bag and making the deliveries during the week before Thanksgiving. Mercy Consulation Center, Headstart, the McGlynn Learn- ing Center and numerous local churches and individuals provid- ed the names of people and fam- ilies in need. The food was pre- sented in reusable grocery bags to encourage recycling. More than 84 Misericordia groups and organizations provid- ed baskets, including Campus Ministry, Student Government Association, Misericordia Na- tional Student Speech-Language- Hearing Association, Misericor- dia Student Occupational Ther- apy Association, University Ad- vancement, Admissions, Teacher Education Department, Resi- dence Hall Association, Scholars in Service in Pennsylvania, Sport Management Club, Social Work Club, Multicultural Education, Bevevino Library staff, Peer Ad- vocates, Student Success Center, Student Nursing Association of Pennsylvania, Culture Club, Cou- gar Cast, Athletic Department, numerous varsity sports teams and residence hall groups, as well as numerous individuals includ- ing Michael A. MacDowell, Mi- sericordia president.
