Karen Boback (R-Colum- bia/Luzerne/Wyoming) encour- ages eligible senior citizens who live in Luzerne and Wyoming counties to sign up to receive vouchers worth $20 from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture at participating farm- ers’ markets and roadside stands. The program, known as the Se- nior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP), was estab- lished to promote the consump- tion of fresh, nutritious, locally- grown fruits and vegetables. Participants in the program will receive four $5 SFMNP vouchers to redeem at qualified farmers’ markets or roadside stands. The vouchers can be used to- ward fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs but cannot be used on proc- essed foods such as jams, honey, nuts, cider or baked goods. Some citrus and tropical fruits are also exempt. To qualify, individuals must be age 60 or older by Dec. 31, 2010 and have a total household in- come, before taxes, of less than $20,036 for a single person and $26,955 for a couple. Income lim- its are subject to change and are based on federal guidelines in place on June 22. Vouchers will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible senior citizens who have not already received them from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, June 22, at the Sweet Valley Church of Christ at 5439 Main Rd., Sweet Valley.
