The battle is later credited with being the opening salvo in the French and Indian War (1754 to 1763). It was Washington's first time in combat. ® On May 26, 1897, the first copies of the classic vampire novel “Dracula,” by Irish writer Bram Stoker, appear in London bookshops. In 1890, Stoker published his first novel, “The Snake's Pass.” Stoker would go on to publish 17 novels in all, but it was “Dracula” that even- tually earned him literary fame. * On May 29,1922, the United States Supreme Court rules that organized baseball did not violate antitrust laws as alleged by the Baltimore franchise of the defunct Federal League in 1915. The Su- preme Court held that organized baseball is not a business, but a sport, in spite of the fact that its clubs and players crossed state lines in order to play. * On May 25, 1935, at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, Babe Ruth hits his 714th home run, a record for career home runs that would stand for almost 40 years. e On May 30,1963, a New Jersey teenager named Lesley Gore makes her first appearance on "American Bandstand,” singing her hit-to-be “It's My Party.” Lesley Gore (nZe Lesley Sue Goldstein) was just a few weeks past her own 17th birthday when she performed one of the greatest teen-drama songs of all time. e On May 27,1972, Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev and U.S. President Richard Nixon, meeting in Moscow, sign the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) agreements. At the time, these agreements were the most far-reaching attempts ever to control nuclear weap- ons. * On May 24,199], the critically acclaimed road movie “Thelma and Louise" debuts in theaters, stunning audiences with a climactic scene in which its two heroines drive off a cliff into the Grand Canyon in a vintage 1966 green Ford Thunderbird convertible. ART WORK ON DISPLAY AT LIBRARY The May exhibit at the Back Mountain Memorial Library's Art Display Wall is a collection of art work by Nicole Cavanaugh. Ni- cole, age 1 of Dallas, has been taking art lessons at Sue Hand's Imagery for the last six years. She enjoys her artwork because “it relaxes me and it's fun.” Her favorite piece in this exhibit is the painting entitled “Christmas Bunnies.” Nicole is a fifth-grade stu- dent at Gate of Heaven School and the daughter of Terry and Ma- ry Lou Cavanaugh, of Dallas. She has a sister Carly, 8 years old. YOUR SPACE Every year Pat Gior- dano feeds the finches in the backyard of her Harveys Lake home. This year, however, she reached a record num- ber with 10 finches on the feeder at one time. Pat says the birds are really a joy to watch! McCarroll won for featured majorette and Swire for best drum major. 40 YEARS AGO Jane Cornell, Sheila Kopcha and Robert Kocher have been named top honor students in the senior class at Lake-Leh- man High School, it has been announced by Anthony Mar- chakitus, principal. The title of valedictorian is being shared this year by Miss Cornell and Mr. Kocher, who had identical final grade point averages. Miss Kopcha is class salutatorian. Debbie Price was chosen Prom Queen of the Dallas Se- nior High School’s annual Ju=() nior-Senior Prom which was held recently in the gymnasi- um. She was escorted by John Fleming. Sue Rother, escorted by Ross Piazza, was first runner- up.
