3 4 Penn tate/ Wilkes-Barre students enjoy day ‘ON’ to honor King Sunday, February 21, 2010 THE DALLAS POST PAGE 13 Six students host community service event at campus in Lehman. Penn State students may have had a day off from classes on Mar- tin Luther King Jr. Day, but for a group of students from six Penn State campuses, the day off be- came a day “on.” Penn State Wilkes-Barre host- ed the five northeast regional Penn State campuses on Monday, Jan. 18, for the Second Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day “ON” Community Service Event. The ‘Martin Luther King Jr. Day “ON” event was started last year at Penn State Hazleton. It is a multi-campus community ser- vice event that will be alternately hosted at one of the six Penn State campuses participating each year: Berks, Hazleton, Le- high Valley, Schuylkill, Wilkes- Barre and Worthington Scran- ton. This year, students traveled to the Wilkes-Barre campus and spent the day volunteering around the Wyoming Valley. From sorting canned goods and boxes of food at the Back Moun- tain Food Pantry to cleaning ani- mal cages at the Luzerne County SPCA, more than 50 students, faculty and staff spent their day serving others. Other organizations where vol- unteers spent time on Monday in- clude Catholic Youth Center (Wilkes-Barre), Hoyt Library, Jewish Community Center, Lands at Hillside Farms and Meadows Manor. According to www.mlkday- .gov, Congress initiated the Mar- tin Luther King Jr. Day of Service in 1994, transforming the federal holiday into a national day of community service grounded in King’s teachings of nonviolence and social justice. Community asked for help in recognizing deserving students The Dallas High School Parent- Teacher-Student Organization sponsors a “Student of the Quar- ter” program which recognizes students who strive to do their personal best and participate in society in ways that are meaning- ful to them, but that also promote public welfare. Each quarter the DHS PTSO gathers to choose four outstand- ing students and recognize them for their accomplishments. Since much of what these stu- dents are involved with are out- of-school activities, the PTSO is seeking input from the communi- ty in nominating individual stu- dents. Anyone may nominate a student for a particular award or community members may send in a reason for nominating that individual. The ballots are reviewed anon- ymously by the selection com- mittee which will match the can- didates to the most appropriate award. These students are recog- nized at school board meetings as well as in the local newspapers. The “Student of the Quarter” ballot and deadline for admission dates are posted online at the Dallas School District website at www.dallassd.com.
