Shaver, of Sha- vertown, is one of 12 undergrad- uate students at The University of Scranton named recipients of Frank O’Hara Awards. The awards are presented to first, second and third- year stu- dents with the highest grade point average in each of the Shaver four colleges at Scranton, which are The Kania School of Man- agement, The College of Arts and Sciences, The Panuska College of Professional Studies and The College of Graduate and Continuing Education. Shaver is a sophomore pursu- ing a double major in history and political science. A graduate of Dallas Senior High School, she is the forum editor for The Aquinas, a member of the Politi- cal Society, the Royals Histor- ical Society and the College Republicans. She also served as an editor for the university’s Trinity Jour- nal. She has maintained a 4.0 grade point average and is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta, the National Freshman Honor Society. The discussions will be in Wyoming County libraries and the Dietrich Theater, but you don’t have to be a Wyom- ing County resident to partici- pate. All you need is a copy of the Pulitizer Prize winning book, “The Grapes of Wrath.” To help enlighten the read- ers’ understanding, Bill Chap- la and Julia Peterson will con- duct discussions at 7 p.m. each Wednesday night at the Tunk- hannock Public Library in addi- tion to discussions in libraries or locations in Nicholson, Lacey- ville, Factoryville, Mehoopany and Noxen. Chapla, a former high school and university English teacher, and Peterson, Assistant Profes- sor of Communications at Keys- tone College, have teamed as dis- cussion leaders for the last three years and have always brought new understanding through their thoughtful guidance and scholar- ship. All are invited to special pre- sentation entitled Images of the Dust Bowl and the Depression on Wednesday, March 3, at the Die- trich Theater. Photos taken by Dorothea Lange will be featured with other images of the times. In the 1930s, Lange was hired as a photojour- nalist by the U.S. government to document the Depression. Her photos, such as the one titled Event brings Great Depression to life “Migrant Mother,” became icons of the times. Work has already begun on the Dietrich Theater’s community production of Frank Galati’s plg- of “The Grapes of Wrath” + will be performed on stage Marc 10-14. Director Jennifer Jenkins has already cast the play and crew which will involve more than 30 local talents, including musicians. During March, the Wyoming County Historical Society and the Wyoming County Cultural Center will collaborate to present displays at the Dietrich Theater, featuring photos and memorabi- lia of the 1930s, including vintage radios and the U.S. Census form, asking if the household has a ra- dio.
