LAKE TOWNSHIP Budget gets green light; traffic lights will be updated By EILEEN GODIN Dallas Post Correspondent Supervisors gave the green light for the 2010 budget and vot- ed to update traffic lights to LED lights at their December 9 meet- ing. The budget, which stands at $317,881, passed and, although calculated differently due to the re-assessment, the mill rate of .322 mills equals the pervious nine mills. a mill is $1 for every $1,000 assessed tax value. Secretary Carlene Price said the tax rate has been the same since 1975. Other components of the bud- get that will stay the same are the $5 per capita tax, a half per- cent real estate tax and earned income tax. This year’s budget is $131,000 less from the previous year’s budget with the difference caused by a $100,000 Communi- ty Development Grant included in the 2009 budget for work com- pleted on Loyalville Road. Supervisor Amy Salansky an- nounced that, in 2009, the town- ship applied for and received roughly $240,000 in state and federal grants. Pushing forward, supervisors approved a motion, giving the Northeast Pennsylvania Alliance permission to apply for funding to replace traffic lights to LED, focusing on traffic lights at the corner of Routes 118 and 29. Chairman Lonnie Piatt said LED lights are brighter and last long- er than the older lights. “We are constantly changing those lights,” Piatt said. The NEPA Alliance has access to $982,800 which 51 communi- ties are attempting to obtain a portion of for the traffic light switch, Salansky said. In other news, a motion was passed to schedule the town- ship’s re-organizational meeting to 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 4, at the municipal building with the regular monthly meeting to fol- low. An auditors meeting is sched- uled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5, in the municipal building. Supervisors passed a time ex- tension for construction on Wes- ley Road. The extension was needed because of inclement weather conditions. Turkey Federation aids families The Red Rock Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Fed- eration stepped up to help less fortunate families in the area by offering warm smiles and hearty meals this holiday sea- son. Through the Turkey Hun- ters Care Program, the Red Rock Chapter provided 85 tur- keys to families in the area to help complete the traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Volunteers distributed 85 frozen domestic turkeys to families in need on November 16 at the Farmer’s Inn on Hill- side Road in Shavertown. “The Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are times for family, but they are also a time when many families are in need,” said NWTF CEO George Thorn- ton. “Turkey Hunters Care is a great way for NWTF volunteers to help these families during some of the most celebrated holi- days of the year.” The NWTF is a national non- profit conservation organization founded in 1973.
