Sunday, November 29, 2009 THE DALLAS POST PAGE 5 Eric Lee hosts former news reporter and his wife to celebrate occasions It is a small world, indeed, and especially small when a oung man from southeast Asia omes intertwined with a couple from the other side of the globe, a newspaperman with roots in Philadelphia and his wife from Bavaria. It all came about in 1976 when Eric Lee, a University of Georgia exchange student from Borneo, came to the Wyoming Valley to manage the newly- opened Empire China restau- rant on Route 315 in Wilkes- Bare. The newspaperman, Earl Watson, then a reporter for the Wilkes-Barre Sunday Independ- ent, found Lee to be an exciting news source for his weekly co- lumn. Through the years, the two became close friends. Having mastered the use of chop sticks, Watson and his wife, Maria, who grew up in Regensburg, Germany during Hitler's regime, were frequent patrons of Empire China and Lee’s eateries which followed. Although the Watsons retired to Florida in 1994, they have remained close friends with Lee and his wife, Rosa. Recently, Lee hosted a party for Watson, who marked his 80th birthday on Nov. 15 and, with his wife, celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 25, at Peking Chef in Dal- las with more than 35 friends and family members in attend- ance. Dr. George Moses was the main speaker and Lee recount- ed some of the more memora- ble moments of his 34-year friendship with Watson.
