Lester B. Squier, supervising principal of Lehman Schools be- lieves some of his students’ eyes are bigger than their stomachs — especially those who have bought two lunch tickets at 15 cents each, for the big Thanks- giving Dinner that will be served in the school cafeteria next Wednesday afternoon. And here’s the reason. On that day the cafeteria will serve cran- berry sauce, roast Back Moun- tain Turkey with Lehman dress- ing, mashed potatoes, gravy, ice cream and beverage. Portions will be extra large because the cafeteria director has purchased seventy-five pounds of turkey more than used last year. —70 YEARS AGO 2 rchase of more than cof 8,000 bushels of apples in Northeastern Pennsylvania re- cently by the Federal Surplus Commodities Corp. has made a considerable dent in this regions staggering apple surplus, the re- sult of the second bumper crop in three years. Twelve carloads of apples — av- eraging about 500 bushels to the car — have been bought from farmers in the Dallas section alone, according to Harold Brace of Orange, who is directing the whittling down of the surplus in seven counties. This year’s crop in Luzern County has been estimated as high as 2,500,000 bushels, which would mean that it exceeds even the bumper crop of 1937. The natural, two-year cycle, added to the fact that a freeze in 1938 killed blossoms and resulted in a short crop last year, is given as an explanation for this year’s sur- plus. Information for “Only Yester- day” is taken from past issues of The Dallas Post which is 120 vears old. The wnformation is printed here exactly as i ap- peared in the newspaper years ago. “Food - turkey, stuff- ing, pumpkin pie.
