Sunday, August 23, 2009 Tue DALLAS POST PAGE 13e Sports = HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Mountaineers open season at Williamsport The 2009 Dallas High School Mountaineers football team will open its season on Friday, Sept. 24, when it travels to William- sport to face the Millionaires. Led by quarterbacks Andrew Ondish, Adam Goeringer and Bobby Saba, the Mountaineers are guided by head coach Ted Jackson. The team will look toward captains Mike Adams, Ryan Bump, Nick Lombard, Damon Marth and Cody Plesnar for leadership this year. Senior members expected to shine on the gridiron include Ryan Bump, Andrew Ondish, Eric Baines, Jim Brown, Josh Stephens, Nick Lombard, Tay- lor Dunn, Michael Adams, Sam Van Horn, Damon Marth, Cody Plesnar and Joe Murray. Assisting Jackson at the helm are assistant coaches Bob Mah- le, Clark Van Orden Jr. John ' McNeil, Ted Jackson Jr., Tony Marranca and Mike Dunn. Because there are no lights at Mountaineer stadium, all games played there are played during daylight hours. Some game time have been pushed back to 2 p.m. due to student testing dates. Homecoming is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10 when the Mountaineers host Hanover Ar- ea. SPORTS BRIEFS Newberry Ladies golf at Applewood The Newberry Ladies Golf League traveled to Apple- wood Golf Course on Thurs- day, Aug.13, for a Captain & Crew golf outing co- chaired by Joyce Lloyd and Sandy Richardson. The winning team consist- ed of Lillian McManus, Judy Schall and Libby Sutton. Runners-up were the team of Jane Jones, Terry Cook, Ruth Federici and Kay Si- mons. Closest to the pin was Lillian McManus and closest to the line winner was Joan Britt. Luncheon followed play on the terrace of the club. The next outing for the Ladies Golf League is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 24, at Irem County Club. Boating course offered The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary-Towanda Flotilla 15-09 will conduct a Boating Safety Class from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Ricketts Glen State Park Office. Participants are asked to bring a lunch. Following the course, there will be an exam. Com- pletion of this 8-hour class enables participants to re- ceive a boating certificate recognized in all states. Cost is $30 for adults, $25 for second person shar- ing book and $20 for stu- dents ages 12 to 17. GOH SEVENTH-GRADE GIRLS WIN CROSS COUNTRY TROPHY Rotary plans golf tourney The 26th Annual Dallas Rotary Fall Golf Classic to support Dal- las Rotary charities will be held at the Irem Temple Country Club on Monday, Sept. 21, beginning with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. The club is looking for hole sponsors at $100 per hole which offers the sponsor a sign promi- nently displayed near a green or tee. Kevin Smith is the chairman for the event. The format is a captain and crew. Individuals are invited to team up with others in a group. The entry fee is $100. Proceeds help the Rotary Club of Dallas sponsor and contribute to the Back Mountain Library, the annual Christmas Shopping Spree for 45 Back Mountain chil- dren, the Dallas/Lake-Lehman/ Northwest School Book Scholar- ships and Essay Contest, dictio- naries for third-graders, gradua- tion lock-in programs, the Lu- zerne County Fall Fair, the Back Mountain Food Pantry and much more. The seventh grade girls from Gate of Heaven School in Dallas recently completed an undefeated season in the Ca- tholic Cross County League for which they won a trophy. They also won the district division meet on May 16. The seventh/ eighth-grade boys came in second place and the fifth/sixth-grade girls came in third and were presented with trophies.
