Bloomers make $10K donation to ASTA The Back Mountain Bloom- ers Garden Club presented a check for $10,000 to the Anthra- cite Scenic Trails Association (ASTA) as part of the formal opening of the new Trucksville Stairs portion of the Back Moun- tain Trail. Judy Rimple, ASTA presi- dent, reported that the Tour of -Back Mountain Gardens is one of the major fundraisers for AS- TA and is crucial to the creation of the Back Mountain Trail, a 10- mile former railroad bed from Luzerne to Dallas being convert- ‘ed into a recreational trail for ‘hiking and biking. The check that was presented ‘to Bill Leandri, chairman of the ASTA Board of Directors, by Li- sa Lindquist of the Bloomer’s ‘Garden Tour committee, repre- sented the proceeds for the 2009 ‘Tour of Back Mountain Gar- “dens. The 2009 tour was held “Saturday, June 27, and attracted “more than 400 visitors in addi- ‘tion to the nearly 75 Bloomers volunteers who helped staff the ‘garden tour locations. . The bi-annual Garden Tour “has grown in scope and profit- \ability since its inception in 12003. The money raised previ- lously was $4,811 in 2003, $3,331 in 2005 and $5,384 in 2007. With the addition of the 2009 pro- ‘ceeds, the total comes to over + $23,000. . “I can’t begin to thank the hard-working volunteers of the ‘Back Mountain Bloomers Gar- ‘den Club for their efforts,” Rim- ‘ple said. “Each tour takes more ' than a year of planning and the ‘committee works tirelessly to ‘make sure that visitors have a wonderful and enlightening time. Rimple officially opened the Trucksville Stairs portion of the Back Mountain Trail with the help of Kingston Township Manager Kathleen Sebastian and Township Supervisor Jim Reino. Also on hand was Bob Skulsky, representing the Sus- quehanna Greenways Partner- hip, and Janet Flack, a member of the ASTA Board of Directors. The stairs are located just off Carverton Road behind the Trucksville Fire Hall and were installed to make that portion of the trail more easily accessible. Dinners, which include a half chicken, baked potato, corn-on-the cob, cole slaw, cake and beverage, are priced at $8 for adults and $4 for children. Takeouts are also available.
