Born in Kingston on July 2, 1943, she was employed as a so- cial worker at St. Michaels School prior to her retirement. She was a member of the unkhannock United Metho- ist Church, the Chancel Choir and a 20-year member of the Tunkhannock Community Am- bulance Association, serving as an EMT and board secretary. She was also an EMT and CPR instructor for the Ameri- can Red Cross and EMS and had served on the Tunkhannock Borough Council as a member for 18 years. Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Bruce; sons, David, of Manchester, N.H.; Stephen, of Tunkhannock; and Paul, of Courtdale; daughter, Terri Ve- lez, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister, Heidi May King, of Cheyenne, Wyo.; eight grand- children; two great-grand- daughters. GELSLEICHTER - Robert R., 75, of Dallas, died Monday, June 1, 2009 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains wnship. Born in Wilkes-Barre, he at- tended Dallas Township schools. Before retiring, he was em- ployed as a chemical compoun- der by Ciba Chemical Corp. He was a member of the Gate of Heaven Church, Dallas; the Dallas Legion; and the Back Mountain Rod and Gun Club. He served with the U. S. Army. Surviving are a brother, Frank C., of Dallas; companion, Dianne Marsh; nieces; nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews. PRICE - Gilbert D. “Sheriff,” 96, of Hunlock Creek, died Tues- day, June 2, 2009 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Cen- ter, Plains Township. Born January 8, 1913 in Leh- man Township, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II asa truck driver for the First Bat- talion 357th Infantry Combat in the Alps of Italy. He was self-em- ployed as a timber log contrac- tor for 60 years. He was an avid supporter of M.A.D.D. and a member of the Hanover Township American Legion Post 609. Surviving are his daughter, Dorothy Price Gray, of Breed- ing, Ky.; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, two great- great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. SCHULTZ - Robert M., 81, of Carverton Road, Kingston Township, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 in The Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dal- las. Born September 9, 1927 in Wilkes-Barre, he graduated from Hughestown High School and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was employed by Glenn Alden and, prior to his retire- ment, was employed for over 32 years by Air Tron, a division of Litton Corporation, Dover, N.J. He was a member of the Sha- vertown United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Louella Coolbaugh Schultz; and a sister, Marquerite Ciannelli, of Hugh- estown. SMITH - Dr. Jay Charles, 80, of Sweet Valley, died Wednes- day, May 13, 2009 at Wilkes- Barre General Hospital. Smith began his military ca- reer as a private in 1946 and re- tired from the US. Army Re- serves as a full Colonel in 1976.His appointment as Unit Commander, 183rd U.S. Army Terminal Station compliment was made by the President of the U.S. Smith was awarded the Army Commendation Medal in 1974 and 1962. He received the Navy Unit Commendation in 1972 for ex- ceptionally meritorious service. While coordinating relief op- erations and providing rescue and logistical support to flood victims in the state of Pennsylva- nia from June 23, 1972 to Sep- tember 25, 1972, Smith received his B.S. degree in education and English. He further earned a Master of Science in Education degree from the University of Pennsylvania and the Degree of Doctor of Education from Tem- ple University in 1974. He was hired by the Board of Education to become the new principal and superintendent of Upper Marion High School. He devoted his public activ- ities as a speaker against the death penalty as part of author- ess of “Dead Man Walking,” Sis- ter Helen Prejean’s Witness to Innocence organization. He also volunteered at St. Vin- cent De Paul Soup Kitchen in Wilkes-Barre. Surviving are his wife, Mau- reen Ann Leary-Smith; a daugh- ter, Sherwyn Smith, Dallas; step-children, Tammy Klucitas, Kingston; Rayleen Burkhardt, Swoyersville; and Raymond Le- ary, Swoyersville; four step- grandchildren. This year’s “Market on the Pond” is the auxiliary’s 25th event of its kind and will feature over 120 vendors offering a varie- ty of goods and treasurers. The auxiliary booths include baked goods, odds and ends, kitchen items, plants, jewelry, books, raffle baskets, residents’ crafts, refreshments in the pavil- ion and much more. CHURCH BRIEFS Vacation Bible School planned Vacation Bible School at Sweet Valley Church of Christ is scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, June 21, through Friday, June 26. The theme of this year’s school, which is open to children ages 2 years to sixth grade, is “Studio Go Game Show.” The last night will be the “fun Fair” of games and prizes with the closing pro- gram. Center Moreland UM sets Bible School “Studio Go! Game Show” will be the theme of Vaca- tion Bible School this year at the Center Moreland United Methodist Church June 22-26. Children and youth will participate in the large group music, skits, Bible stories, crafts, refreshments, games and special mission projects where the children will be encouraged and mo- tivated to go out and serve others.
