PAGE 10 Sunday, May 10, 2009 THE DALLAS POST BRIDGE Continued from Page 1 jects) have nothing to do with the emergency that caused this problem to begin with. They were trying to tell me this money wasn’t allocated for this bridge.” Many other residents on Lincoln Street feel the same as Goeringer. “I was shocked they’re not going to fix it,” Karl Scholl said. “So many people come down and they turn around be- cause they still think it’s open.” Linda Scholl, Karl Scholl’s sister, believes the bridge was the safer route to her home during inclement weather. “This road only has one out- let,” said Arlene Zibuck. “If something happened up here, we're stuck. If they're going to rip it down, how much more would it cost to replace it?” Goeringer offered to person- ally fund the difference need- ed to replace the bridge, which he estimates is about $60,000, but his offer has been rejected by every council member. He says all of Lincoln Street is zoned commercial and that not having the bridge will neg- atively affect property values. “He did make an offer,” Peiffer said. “But we felt very uncomfortable taking from a citizen to do this. We just didn’t think that was the way it should be handled.” Goeringer started a petition to replace the bridge and col- lected about 50 signatures in one week. He expects the list to grow. Not all of the people living in the area of the bridge want it back. Holly Spencer, who resides on Orchard Street alongside the bridge, thinks council made the right decision. Spen- cer has a toddler and says there are 11 children in nine houses in the area. Spencer operated a beauty shop in her home at one time MUNICIPALITIES WILL HOLD AUCTION Jackson Township and Kingston Township will hold a Multi-Municipal Surplus Action with LAG Auction Services of Duryea at10 a.m. on Sat- urday, May 16, at the Jackson Town- ship Municipal Building on Hunts- ville Road. She says the neighborhood is more peaceful and safer without bridge access to Route 309. Bruce 5 Gosringer left, Donna Hudak, center, and Linda Scholl are shocked looking over a newspaper article that says the bridge near their properties on Orchard Street in Dallas will not be rebuilt even though Dallas Borough has received FEMA funds to rebuild it. Goeringer says not having a bridge restricts his busi- ness and commercial property on the street. and feels her business was not affected when the bridge be- came unusable. She says several months ago she went to a borough meeting with a petition of people op- posed to the bridge and was ig- nored, so she is surprised, but happy, that the borough is not going to replace it. If council members change their minds, Spencer says she’ll move. “Previous to the bridge be- ing out, I didn’t really know my neighbors because of the traffic,” Spencer said. “There’s so much more sense of com- munity now.” : Serving Lunch | c i c q VI dl | Tues. - Fri., 11:30a.m. to 2p.m., ‘Dinner !
