DALLAS SCHOOL DISTRICT Approval of summer program is granted By REBECCA BRIA rbria@timesleader.com Dozens of parents whose chil- dren attend Dallas School Dis- trict’s before- and after-school care program attended Monday night's regular school board meeting to find out whether the school district will continue the program as well as an anticipat- ed summer care program provid- ed by Hildebrandt Learning Cen- ters. The board voted 7-2 to ap- prove a summer program through Hildebrandt to be held from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays from June 15 through August 14 at Dallas Elementary School. About 40 students are signed up for the summer school program. Hildebrandt Learning Cen- ters, LLC, sent a letter to parents whose children are in the pro- gram, informing them that Dal- las decided to forego a summer daycare program. Hildebrandt holds an implied contract with the district for the 2008-09 school year. Patricia Phillips, a parent who utilizes the daycare, was con- cerned that time is running out. “As a parent that’s working, you have two full-time jobs,” Phillips said. “You have to know ahead of time. The board questioned a number of items in the plans drawn up by Quad Three Group, the architec- tural firm hired for the project. Board members will meet next week to review the plans and bids for the project, which is ex- pected to begin before the end of the school year. Michael Sikora of Ross Town- ship urged the board to keep the safety of the students in mind and stressed the importance of fencing around Ross Elementary. Board member Charles Balavage assured Sikora the existing fenc- ing will not be removed and that additional fencing will be added. The board voted 7-2 to ap- prove the 2009-2010 general op- erating budget of the Luzerne In- termediate Unit. Board mem- bers Andrew Salko and Balavage voted against the $2,513,147 spending plan. : In other business, the board: e Adopted the 2009-2010 school calendar.
