PAGE 6 THE DALLAS POST Sunday, September 14, 2008 Clemson captures county crown By REBECCA BRIA rbria@timesleader.com Nicole Clemson, 17, of Dallas, was named the 2008 Luzerne County Fair Queen on the eve- ning of Saturday, Aug. 23, in con- junction with the fair VIP /volun- teer reception. She received $1,000 from the Carrie L. Martin Memorial En- dowment, which is in memory of the 2003 Luzerne County Fair Queen who was murdered in May 2004 in her Larksville home. Clemson will compete for the ti- tle of State Queen at the State Queen Pageant in January 2009 at the State Fair Association Con- vention in Hershey. The daughter of Paul and Tru- dy Clemson, of Dallas, Clemson is a senior at Dallas High School. She is a member of the school’s varsity field hockey and girl’s soc- cer teams, vice president of stu- dent council, Science Olympiad, the JETS team, ski club and is a peer mediator. Clemson is also a member of Wilkes-Barre Junior Leadship and will serve on the 2009 advisory committee, Hugh O'Brian Leadership alumni, a girl scout, a volunteer for the Back Mountain Memorial Li- brary’s haunted library, an ASP- CA volunteer and holds a black belt in Kenpo Karate. “I was the youngest and the shortest, but it was an honor to be thefair queen thisyear,” Clem- son said. “The tiara was so shiny, I was amazed by it. I was really hoping to win and I was so excit- ed to finally win. I am so excited to have this title and represent the fair as best as I can.” First runner-up Karlene Yoz- wiak, 20, of Larksville, won a $500 United States Savings Bond. She is an instructor at the Conserva- tory of Dance in Hanover Town- ship and is the head coach for the Wyoming Valley West junior high cheerleading team. “Yes, I was surprised,” Yoz- wiak said of being selected first runner-up. “I thought my inter- view and speech went really well, but it was an honor tobe chosen.” Bryn Harvey, of Trucksville, was the 2007 Luzerne County Fair Queen. Participants in the 2008 Lu- zerne County Fair Queen Con- test had to be between 16 and 20 years of age by June 1, 2008, a res- ident of Pennsylvania and never married. Each contender sub- mitted a portrait type color pho- tograph, signed agreement and application and proof of age. Contestants had to write an es- say titled, “What My Fair Means to My Community” in 300 words or less that was mailed in with their application. Prior to the contest, each par- ticipant had a private interview with the judges in which she was asked questions regarding the fair. During the queen competi- tion, every contestant presented a three to five minute persuasive speech on the topic, “Why You Should Come to My Fair.” Con- testants were judged on their es- say, speech, private interview, poise, appearance (in which a dress was required), neatness and ability to speak clearly. Clemson was required to be present every day of the fair in which she interacted with fair- goers and volunteered at the Dal- las Rotary, Dallas Kiwanis and Dallas Lions booths.
