DHS seniors organize event in memory of 1st Lt. Michael Cleary A local version of the na- tional “Run for the Fallen” honored all soldiers who have lost their lives in Operation Iraqi Freedom and especially memorialized Michael J. Cleary, a Back Mountain sol- dier who lost his life in mil- itary action. Run for the Fallen is a col- lective’ group‘ of runners who began their cross country run on June 14th from Fort Irwin, CAlif. They will complete their journey across the country on Aug. 24 in Arlington National Cemetery. Their mission is to run one mile for every soldier lost in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The idea for Run for the Fallen came from Jon Bellona, who lost his best friend and college roommate, Cleary, three years ago. Cleary was a graduate of Dallas High School. Because of Cleary, seven ju- niors from Dallas High School and their advisor were in- spired to hold a local 5K Run for the Fallen on Aug. 14 at Penn State Wilkes Barre. Over 160 runners and ap- proximately 30 bikers and walkers participated in the event. The students raised over $3,000 which will benefit four organizations: Wounded War- rior Project, TheYellow Rib- bon Fund, 1st Lt. Michael J. Cleary Fund and H.U.G.G.S. (Helping United Gold Star Survivors). The local event was coordi- nated as a Senior Completion Bob Micikas was the first male runner to cross the finish line in thev SK "Race for the Fallen" held at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus. Twelve-year-old Regan Rome was the top female finisher in the local event. Project by Ellen Arnaud, Mitch Cohen, Dana Martin, Jimmy Brown, Taylor Bow- man, Chris Dailey and Griffin Adams, who will all enter their junior year at Dallas High School next month.
