The Lands’ Project KinderGar- den has sparked interest from 38 kindergarten classes from Wilkes- Barre Area, Dallas, Lake-Lehman School District and the Wyoming Valley Montessori School to get students learning about gardening by experiencing it. Headed by Christine Doherty, Project KinderGarden is funded through the Department of Agri- culture’s Healthy Farms/Healthy School initiative which encourag- es collaboration between Pennsyl- vania schools and their local farms. In addition to creating a gar- den for each school, Project Kin- derGarden focuses on teaching nu- trition and healthy eating to area youth. Chris Tweedy, The Lands at Hillside Farms’ Director of Devel- opment, hopes the program will help students have a better under- standing of where their food comes from and looks forward to it growing in coming years. The program wrapped up witha family day on the farm on Satur- day, May 31, where parents and educators were present to admire the gardening work of the students in the farm’s on-site greenhouse.
