Recently, she competed at the Region 7 Qual- ifier meet held at the Newport News University, Newport News, VA. where her All-Around score was 36.2 which included a third place medal (9.325) on the uneven bars. Skammer trains 20 hours a week at the United Sports Acad- emy in Dunmore and is coached by Dima Raynova, a former Olympic gold medalist from Bulgaria and Omar Egis, a for- mer gymnast from Equador. A resident of Dallas, Skam- mer is a freshman at Dallas High School. Fishing program at Frances Slocum Families with young people ages 8 and older with little or no fishing experience are invited to a Family Fishing Basics program from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, at Frances Slocum State Park. Participants will earn about aquatic animals, the need for clean water, outdoor manners, angler safety and, most impor- tantly, learn to fish, too. All equipment and bait will be provided. The Back Mountain Recre- ation, Inc. Board of Directors will hold a Field Naming Ceremony at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at its 130-acre recreation complex on Outlet Road in Lehman Town- ship. The public is invited to at- tend. “We are thrilled with the pro- gress we have made so far in the development of what will some- day be the Kirby Park of the Back Mountain,” said Rick Coslett, president of the Back Mountain Recreation Board. “We will be recognizing three of our major donors by naming the completed soccer and lacrosse fields in their honor. Their continued enthusi- asm and strong level of support have helped make this phase of our project a success. “We are taking this opportuni- ty to formally thank them for their continued support and strong commitment to this pro- ject,” added Coslett. With the help of private do- nors, local foundations, DCNR, the PA Department of Communi- ty and Economic Development, and Luzerne County, Back Mountain Recreation Inc. has ac- quired the property for the com- plex and is in the process of a mul- ti-phased development. Two soc- cer fields and a lacrosse field are complete and construction of four more soccer fields is under- way. The next phase of the project will include restrooms, a conces- sion area, pavilions and hiking trails. Future phases include a playground, baseball and multi- purpose fields, basketball and tennis courts, an ice-skating rink and a skateboarding area. The complex is open to the public. Bandits strong, but still look for first win The Back Mountain Bandits lacrosse team came out strong last Saturday against their oppo- nent, Forks Township. Corey Patrick scored a goal early with help of the offense of Luke Yaple, Ryon Cohen, Adam Adelman, Kuris Caraichner and David Nape but, by the end of the first quarter, the Bandits trailed, 31. The Middies were being rotat- ed throughout the game in hopes to slow down the Forks team. Playing middies were Corey Pa- trick, Justin Huchins, Aaron Kliamovich, Stone Mannello, Ricky Morgan, Michael Snatora, Duncan Breig, RJ Driscoll and Xavier Barber. Forks Township enjoyed a 9-1 halftime lead but the defense of Ryan Spears, RJ Spears, Connor Switzer, Connor Duffy and Owen Kiluk didn’t allow Forks to score for the rest of the game. In the third quarter, Bandits Justin Hutchins and Keith Gil- lette both scored. Late in the fourth quarter, Keith Gillette scored for the Bandits but Forks still earned a 94 victory. LEHMAN-JACKSON RED TEAM WINS ELEMENTARY CAGE CHAMPIONSHIP The three Lake-Lehman elementary boys basketball teams recently ended their seasons. The championship game held at the Lake-Lehman Junior/Senior High School pitted Ross Elemen- tary School against the Lehman-Jackson red team. The Lehman-Jackson team defeated Ross, 26-24, by scoring the winning basket with just 2.4 seconds remaining in the game. GATE OF HEAVEN RUNNERS JOIN HOLY REDEEMER CROSS COUNTRY CONFERENCE Students in fifth through eighth grades at Gate of Heaven School have teamed with St. Mary/ St. Nick's School in to join the Holy Redeemer Cross Country Conference. The team held its first exposition meet on April 16 with the season's first meet on April 23. The season contains four meets with the conference championships to be held on May 17. Head coach is Ed Roman, who is also Holy Redeemer head coach. Len Valenti, Ann Morrison and Janice Szczechowicz are as- sistant coaches. Ryan Zapoticky cracked a solo homer in the top of the seventh to break a 5-5 tie. Nigel Stearns struck out 11 A’s in the win. Aaron Napkora drilled a home run for the A’s and Joe Stier was stellar on the mound in the loss. Yankees 6 Dodgers 1 Four Yankees pitchers held the Dodgers to two hits as the Yankees won, 6-1. Mariano Medico, Domenic Ol- iveri, Matt Doggett and Blake Williams struck out 12 in the win. Doggett had three hits, including a homer and triple while Medico had three hits also. Oliveri added two hits for the Yanks. Justin Brojakowski and Cody Paraschak had hits for the Dodgers. Rangers 5 Red Sox 0 Chad DeBona and Greg Petorak combined on a one- hit shutout and struck out 11 as the Rangers downed the Red Sox, 5-0. Petorak homered and DeBona singled in the win. Tom Flores had the only safety for the Sox. A’s 16 Phillies 4 Francois Ross banged out four hits as the A’s crushed the Phillies, 16-4. Craig Skudalski, Aaron Napkora and Ricky Stayer had three hits each in the win. Omar Nizmeth picked up the win on the mound. Rosario Bevevino pitched well for the Phillies in the loss. Yankees 7 Giants 1 The Yankees ran their record to 4-0 as they clipped the Giants, 7-1. Mariano Medico and Domenic Oliveri gave up only four hits in the win on the mound. Blake Williams doubled and homered and Matt Doggett also hit a home run for the Yanks. Ryan Zapoticky led the Giants offense with two doubles. As 7 Orioles 0 In a rainshortened contest, the A’s shut out the O’s, 7-0. Aaron Napkora threw one-hit ball over four innings to pick up the win. Ricky Stayer and Craig Skudalski had two hits each for the winners while Josh Evans and Chris Ferrara each had a single. David Simpson had the lone hit for the Orioles. Rangers 10 Pirates 0 ; Kyle Razawich struck out nine and gave up only one hit as the Rangers blanked the Pirates, 10-0. Bill Gately had two hits with a double and Greg Petorak had two hits with a triple for the winners. Brain Banas and Jonathon Wilson had the hits for the Bucs. Pirates 10 Phillies 4 Brian Banas banged out three hits as the Pirates downed the Phils, 10-4. Brian Douse made a spectacular defensive play for the Pirates. Chad Phillips pitched well in defeat.
