Classes for hunters, equitation, pleasure and model entries will begin at 8 a.m. An annual feature is the “Tommy” Heffernan Memorial Hunter Classic, sponsored by Allie Heffernan and family. A silent auction will also be held where a “Jazzy Legend” mo- torized scooter, donated by Pride Mobility, will be on dis- play to be sold in the auction. Proceeds from this year’s show will benefit Bridles and Grooms 4-H Horse Club and REASON (Retired Equine Adoption Society of the North- east). REASON is the only non- profit 501-C3 equine adoption organization in Northeast Pennsylvania and is dedicated to providing the first step to a new beginning for unwanted or rescued horses and ponies in need of caring homes. Spectators are welcome at no charge. Coffee is free all day at the 4-H refreshment stand that will also offer home-cooked food. The Dallas Horse and Pony Show has become a popular tra- dition on Mother’s Day with ex- hibitors from Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey com- peting for cash awards, ribbons, trophies, prizes and year-end points. A member event of the North- eastern Pennsylvania Horse- men’s Association, the Dallas Horse and Pony Show is the season’s first of over 30 NPHA English and western horse shows held in Luzerne, Lacka- wanna and Wayne counties. SPORTS BRIEFS Newberry Ladies Golf League begins The Newberry Ladies Golf é. League will begin its 2008 sea- son on Monday, April 28, with a luncheon at Appletree Terrace at noon. League play begins Monday, May 5. Members are requested to arrive at 9 a.m. with play beginning at 9:30 a.m. Carts may be reserved by contacting the office at 675-5237 on Friday prior to league play. Fishing program slated for Frances Slocum Families with young people ages 8 and older with little or no fishing experience are invited to a Family Fishing Basics program from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, at Frances Slocum State Park. Participants will learn about aquatic animals, the need for clean water, outdoor manners, angler safety and, most impor- tantly, learn to fish, too. All equipment and bait will be provided.
