CHURCH BRIEFS Election Day fund raiser planned “Soldiers of Christ” youth group of the Center Moreland United Methodist Church will sponsor several activities on Election Day, Tuesday, April 22. All proceeds will go to the youth group’s upcoming mis- sion trip fund. In June several youth will travel to West Vir- ginia for a special mission work project. . A bake sale with Welsh coo- kies will be held from 8 a.m. until all items are sold at the Northmoreland Fire Hall. National Day of Prayer scheduled The Center Moreland Unit- ed Methodist, Creamery Road, will hold a National Day Of Prayer event on Thursday, May 1 This year’s theme is, “Prayer! America’s Strength & Shield.” The prayer event schedule is as follows: 6 a.m., Quiet prayer time & coffee hour (especially for those on their way to work); 7- 7:45 a.m., Prayer breakfast; 8 a.m. Prayer ser- vice. Reservations are requested for the prayer breakfast and can be made by calling 333- 4226. There is no charge for the prayer event but an offering basket will be available for a donation to the National Day of Prayer Task Force. Spring Chicken Barbeque set The Trustees of the Trucks- ville United Methodist Church will hold their Spring Chicken BBQ on Friday and Saturday, May 2 and 3, at the Dickson Educational Facility, Church Road, Trucksville. Take-out orders will be avail- able from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Dining room service will be available from 5 to 7 p.m. each day in Fellowship Hall. Prayer Shawl Workshop slated A Prayer Shawl Ministry Workshop will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday May 3, at the Shavertown United Methodist Church, 163 N. Pioneer Ave., Shavertown. Janet Bristow and Victoria Cole-Galo, co-founders of the Prayer Shawl Ministry, will lead an afternoon of knitting/ crocheting, story sharing, devotions, and dessert. BANKES - Glenda Mae, of Bunker Hill, died Sunday, April 13, 2008 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Born in Wilkes-Barre on November 14, 1934, she graduated from Westmoreland High School and was employed by Mark De- velopment holdings for 45 years prior to her retirement. She was a member of the Carverton United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Fred Bankes; sons, Todd, Missouri; David, Exeter; and Brad, Wilkes-Barre; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. BROWN - Gerald R., 74, of Tunkhannock and Duryea, died on Saturday, April 5, 2008. He was a founding member of the Pine Flats Lodge, Manchester Township. He also belonged to the American Legion Post 585, Duryea, and Nativity BVM Church, Tunkhan- nock. Surviving are his wife, the former Theresa Bauman; daughter, Emily Eaton, of Duryea; son, James, of Willow Grove; sister, Cathe- rine Bossi, of Old Forge; one grandson. CAREY - Robert L. Carey, 93, of Shireman- stown, formerly of Dallas, died on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 in Camp Hill. Born in Dorrance, he was a graduate of Forty Fort High School and the Wyoming Seminary School of Busi- ness. Before retiring, he was the owner of Robert L. Carey Insurance Agency, Wilkes Barre. He attended the Dallas United Methodist Church and was previously a member of the Forty Fort United Methodist Church and the George M. Dallas Lodge 531 F&A.M. He was active for 44 years in the Wyoming Valley Bar- ber Shop Chorus of the S.P.E.B.S.Q.A. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Doris Dennis Carey; and a son, David C., Shireman- stown. GAFFNEY - Sister Maureen Catherine, RSM, 73, a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Mid Atlantic Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas and a resident of Mer- cy Center, Dallas, died on Monday, April 7, 2008. Born on May 19, 1934 in Hazleton, she was a 1951 graduate of St. Ann’s, Freeland. She en- tered the Sisters of Mercy at Dallas on Sep- tember 8, 1951 and made her profession of vows on March 12, 1954. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in ele- mentary education from College Misericor- dia in 1958, a master’s degree in elementary education from the University of Scranton in 1968 and did post-graduate work in psycholo- gy at Fordham University and Syracuse Uni- versity in New York, as well as post-graduate work in theology and psychology in Rome. Sister Maureen ministered in the elemen- tary schools in Dallas, New York, Allentown, Pittsburgh and Washington, DC. For many years, she ministered in the Movement for a Better World, an international retreat organi- zation. She also served as a hospice volunteer at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, and on the staff of Mercy Center. Surviving are her siblings, Ann Marie Cer- iani, Freeland; James E. Surviving are her sister, Nettie Sanders, formerly of Kingston; nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. SHELLY - Dr. W. Dayton , of Tunkhannock, died Friday, April 11, 2008 at home. Born February 17,1943 in Abington, he was a graduate of Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio, and Temple Medical College, Philadelphia. He graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha hon- ors and completed his surgical residency at Abington Memorial Hospital, Abington, Pa. Prior to medical school, Dr. Shelly was a Vietnam-era member of the U.S. Army sta- tioned at Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D.C. Following his residency at Abington Hospital, he joined the practice of surgery with Dr. William R. Host in Tunkhannock. SUMC continues concert series The Fine Arts Concert Se- ries of Shavertown United Methodist Church will pre- sent “Songs for All Seasons” at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 27. Featured will be vocal and bell choirs from SUMC and guests, along with congre- gational singing of favorite hymns with organ, bells, trumpet and choirs. Guest artist will be Rob- ert “Bobby” Baird, longtime area trumpet player who has delighted audiences for years. A three-time state champ trumpeter, Baird played in the United States Navy Band and has performed with Bobby Baird’s Dixie- land Jazz Band for over 50 years. He received the Penn- sylvania Jazz Society’s Mu- sician Jazzer Award for the year 2000. Mark Pall, son of Rev. Jim and Susan Pall, an 11-year- old organist from Dallas, will also be featured on the concert. A free will offering will be taken and a reception will follow the concert.
