Sunday, February 3, 2008 THE DALLAS POST PAGE 3 DALLAS HIGH SCHOOL CAREER DAY Learning the bust By Charlotte Bartizek Dallas Post Correspondernt There were no butchers, bak- ers or candlestick makers at the Dallas Senior High School Ca- reer and Vocational Day. Instead, the students met and listened to 32 area professionals om the greater Wilkes-Barre mmunity that included chiro- practors, musicians, sports managers, landscapers, engi- neers and massage therapists. All talked about their careers and education and some about the passion and dedication they feel for their work. High school student Dave Martindale sat in and listened to State Senator Lisa Baker and State Rep Karen Boback. “They gave us a good insight into what it would be like to be in the state senate,” Martindale fedinan is torn, though. “I've thought about it, gov- ernment or education for my- self because I do like kids, too,” he mused. “I worked with Awa- na at the Grace Community Church and my grandfather was a school principal at Valley West.” Though graduation is three years away, Martindale thoughtfully ponders the fu- ture. Career Day has helped him focus on his choices and hroaden his views. Most presenters feel the fu- ture was predicated on the past and suggested that students start out with a basic four-year college program. That is, how- ever, where a traditional path to success ended. Career paths are as varied today as the doors and labyrinths of Alice’s trip through Wonderland. Listening to how Robert Bel- za, director of ticketing for the CHARLOTTE BARTIZEK PHOTOS/ FOR THE DALLAS POST Engineer Steve Thompson of Integrated Power Designs in Hanover Township, shared trade maga- zines to share with students at a Dallas Senior High School Career Day. With a local background and a degree in accounting from Mi- sericordia University, Belza considers himself to be among the fortunate few who have not had to move out of the area to follow their careers. He credits the Penguins with providing an internship program for area youth and says that many of the regular fulltime employees of the organization come from those ranks. One perk, he says, is that he has an “in” on sport- ing event tickets anywhere in the country as he networks with other sports event managers. Another couple who empha- sized the flexibility of their ca- reer choice were Steve and Diane Thompson, both engi- neers with Integrated Power Designs in Hanover Township. Electrical and chemical engi- neers, respectively, the Thomp- sons feel their education at Ren- saeller Polytechnical Institute and the engineering field has al- lowed them to lead a comfort- able, creative life even though many of their college engineer- ing buddies have applied their FREE DELIVERY IN BACK MT: ARES, | FINO’S PHARMACY MICHAEL J. Remarking on the number of students who poured into the high school auditorium to hear them, the Thompsons were “very pleasantly sur- prised.” Sophomores Brad Sherman and Matt Silvestri eagerly read a trade magazine that the Thompsons shared. Both boys want a chance at the engineer- ing field - Matt in mechanical engineering because he likes to “build things” and Brad in elec- trical engineering because a “friend in the family is an elec- trician.” The boys plan to go as far as they can in math next year. But not all the careers were traditional ones. Home-grown Swoyersville vocalist and musician Dyer Knight presented musical wa- nabees with probably the most exotic career possibilities of the day, sharing his experiences as a lead vocalist for an 80’s rock band which toured Europe and played in large stadiums to adoring crowds. He'd be the first to admit that the pathways to a career are many and varied. & Guys...It’ Pod Things got out of control during Gate of Heaven's Catholic Schools Week Hat Day activities.
