Career Day custom is being revitalized 2008 has bred a certain deter- mination at Dal- las High School, as the second half of the calen- dar year is al- ready proving to be one full of hard work and success. With the new year, Dallas High School will revitalize an old cus- tom - that of Career Day. On Janu- ary 25, all students in grades 9-12 will attend select sessions in cho- sen career fields during the morning hours of the school day. Students can craft an individual schedule online. Seniors did so on January 10, juniors on January 11, sophomores will do so on Ja- nuary 14 and freshmen on Janu- ary 15. Parents and students should be aware that, despite the program, classes will be held on January 25. It should also be noted that, through interaction with professionals, students may be able to develop a new outlook on their futures. Strategizing for graduation Dallas High School seniors are already strategizing for gradua- tion. Senior Steering, with the as- sistance of the senior class, has been raising funds for the Class of 2008 graduation ceremony and accompanying Senior Lock-In through a variety of recent fund- raisers this year. Battle of the Bands has bee a major aid to the senior class over the past few years. This year the event will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. on March 1. Although this day is quite far away, auditions for the contest are coming up on February 2. Starting at 9 a.m. in the high school auditorium, auditions will ROSEMARY SHAVER DALLAS HIGH SCHOOL determine which six bands will compete in the contest. Each au- dition will last about 20 minutes. In order to audition, all bands must pay $35 upfront on the day of the audition. Fortunately, all bands that are not selected for the battle will receive a full re- fund, in addition to complimen- tary tickets to the show. On March 1, the champions of this musical battle will be award- ed $250, second place will re- ceive $ 100, and third place will be awarded $50. All bands eager to participate in the Dallas High School Battle of the Bands must come to the tryouts on February 2 for a shot at a nice monetary prize, as well as the opportunity to present their music to peers. For an audition time and any additional information, contact Cory at DHSBattleofthe- bands2008@gmail.com. Connect-ED launched Due to frequent powerful weather events, the Dallas School District has launched Connect-ED, a new program that allows for district communica- tion with parents or guardians. In the event of weather-related school delays, closings or early dismissals and other emergen- cies, Connect-ED will alert par- ents of the situation. However, Connect-ED was also designed to inform caregivers of the dates of important school events, such as report card distri- bution. Much change is going on in the high school, as well as the district itself and this one appears to be among the positives. Yearbooks still available The above issues, however, are not the sole occurrences at the high school. Students should be reminded to pick up their year- books in the office. Copies still re- main for purchase at $110 from those students who have not yet purchased one. Juniors should schedule meetings Juniors under Ms. Sherman are reminded to schedule junior meetings, if possible, with friends to plan for their senior year. FAFSA Night planned A second FAFSA (Free Appli- cation for Federal Student Aid) Night will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, in the high school auditorium. Parents and students are welcomed to attend for expert insight on applying for financial aid. Selective Service registration Senior males are also remind- ed to register for Selective Ser- vice within 30 days of their 18th birthday. As a federal law, failure to register will disqualify stu- dents for federal student loans or grants for college, job training benefits and many state and fed- eral jobs. Register at WWW.sss.gov or pick up a regis- tration form at the post office. It is sure to be a busy year, yet the work seems worth the prom- ise. Rosemary Shaver is a senior at Dallas High School.
