Salvation Army plans for holiday S€ason As in years past, The Salva- tion Army of Wilkes-Barre is preparing to help those in need this holiday season. Ap- plications for food boxes and Christmas gifts for children will be taken at the Salvation Army, 17 S. Pennsylvania Ave- nue, on the following dates: Tuesday, Oct. 9 - 9 a.m. to noon, 1 to 3.p.m., 5 to 7p.m.; Wednesday, Oct. 10 - 9 a.m. to noon, 1 to 3 p.m.; Thursday, Oct. 10-9 a.m. tonoon; 1to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Those in need of food and gifts should come prepared with identification for every- one living in their household, proof of income and a current rent receipt. The Gate of Heaven Altar and Rosary Society recently held its annual Birthday Tea at Gate of Heaven Church in Dallas. More than 200 peo- ple attended the major fun- draiser. MU prof receives doctoral degree Brenda Hage, Ph.D., CR.N.P,, assistant professor of nursing and coordinator of the Health Care Informatics Program at Misericordia University, recently re- ceived her doctoral de- gree in health related sci- ences with a specialization in gerontol- ogy from Virginia Common- wealth University, Medical College of Virginia campus. Dr. Hage’s dissertation, “An Exploration of the Relation- ships Among Health Literacy, Social Support, and Patient Activation in Community Re- siding Older Adults,” explored factors that impact on older adults’ ability to successfully manage their health as chronic disease becomes more preva- lent in our aging society. She is board certified in Fam- ily Practice by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (N.P.-C.), as an Adult Health Nurse Practitioner (A.P.R.N.- B.C.) and in Informatics Nurs- ing (R.N,, B.C.) by the Amer- ican Nurses Credentialing Cor- poration. Dr. Hage maintains an active clinical practice in the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation with North- Hage eastern Rehabilitation Associ- ates, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The veteran nurse and nurse educator was also the recipient of the 2003 American Academy of Nurse Practitioners’ State Award for Excellence and the 2005 Distinguished Nurse Prac- titioner Achievement Alumni Award at Misericordia Uni- versity. Her research interests include health literacy, health communication and health care informatics. Dr. Hage and her husband, Nafty, live in Dallas. The couple has two sons, David and Mi- chael. Yanik graduates from Army ROTC program John P. Yanik has graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) Lead- er’s Training Course at Fort Knox, Ky. The four-week course is a leadership internship for cadets that can lead to the ultimate goal of becoming an Army officer. The cadets are trained to have a sound understanding of traditional leadership values during the challenging, motiva- ting “hands-on” training. The training develops well-disci- plined, highly motivated, phys- ically conditioned students, an helps improve the cadets’ self- confidence, initiative, lead- ership potential, decision mak- ing and collective team cohe- sion.
