Three of the induc- tees are from the Lake-Leh- man School District. Rich Davis was a two- time First Team All Conference basketball player at Lake-Lehman High School. senior year and scored over 1,000 points in high school. Davis participated in three NCAA Basketball Tournaments at Franklin Marshall College, advancing to the Final Four once. He was the captain of both his high school and col- lege teams. Jean Lipski was an out- standing field hockey player at Lake-Lehman High School and Wilkes College. She was the first player from the area to. be selected to the Mideast Field Hockey Team. She is the current field hockey coach at Lake-Lehman High School. Lipski coached the team to P.ILA.A. State Cham- pionships in 1996 and 2002, and she has an overall coach- ing record of 363-77-24. Jack Sorber was a Regional Wrestling Champion at Lake- Lehman High School in 1964. He was the first Back Moun- tain wrestler to make it to the State Tournament and was an All Scholastic baseball player as a catcher. Sorber was a var- sity wrestler and baseball player at Wilkes College. He was also a member of a state championship softball team. Sorber SPORTS BRIEFS Dallas Cheerleading Clinic is back The Dallas Varsity Cheer- leaders will hold a clinic for children in grades K-8 in the gymnasium at the Dallas High School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on August 24, 25 and 26. Par- ents will be invited to a show at 1p.m. on August 26. All participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt, a daily snack time, a daily craft time, games and prizes! Cost is $35 per child and $25 for each additional sibling. Sign-ups will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 6, at the Dallas High School. FOURTAYNERRS Sam Van Horn has Dallas High School football in his blood. The Dallas football player is the son of Ed Van Horn, a for- mer Dallas football player who gradu- ated in 1979. He is also the younger brother of Tom Van Horn, another Dallas football team member who graduated in 2004. “He’s always been around it (football) and enjoyed it,” Ed Van Horn said of his son. The Van Horns and many other fam- ilies are gearing up for another season of Dallas High School Mountaineers foot- ball. Team members, coaches, cheer- leaders, families, and fans came out Wednesday evening for “Meet the Team Night” at Mountaineer Stadium. Ted Jackson Sr., who has been head coach of the team for 22 years, admits this is a rebuilding year for the team, but has confidence in his players. “We're always optimistic,” said Jack- son. “Our numbers are down, but our en- thusiasm is high.” The Dallas football team has never had a losing season under Jackson who said Dallas won the state championship in 1993 and has "10 or 11 league cham- pionships." Last year’s team finished with a 7-3 record. Anthony Rubbico, a starter and cap- tain of this year’s team, says althoughit is a rebuilding year for offense, the defense is still strong and he expects the team to have a 64 or 7-3 season. Rubbico says the team’s goal is to make it to districts and win the district championship. Brigitte Meskers, mother of player Steve Meskers, has great faith in the team. “We think they’ll have a wonderful, successful season like last year,” she said, optimistically. This year’s football team captains are Pat Murray, Anthony Rubbico, Fred Mi- hal, Joe Hayes, and Steve Pearson. Quar- terbacks include Derek Martin, Nick Lombard, Andrew Ondish and Fred Mi- hal. Assistant coaches are John McNeil Sr., Ted Jackson Jr., Bob Mahle, Clark Van Orden Jr., Mike Dunn, Jerry Shovlin and Kevin Arnaud. Trio takes 3rd in triathlon The relay team of Brian Poepper- ling, 16; Stacey Stepniak, 16, and Brandon Harding, 14, captured third place at the annual Kiwanis Youth Triathlon held recently at Nay Aug Park, Scranton. The trio competed against relay teams from Northeast- ern Pennsylvania in the 13-18 year old age bracket. Stepniak swam 200 meters in 2:49, Poepperling biked 5.2 miles in 19:27 and Harding ran two miles in 14:05. The team completed the course in 37:23. They were awarded medals and tro- phies for their top three finish. Stepniak is the daughter of Ben and Sheri Stepniak of Spencer Road, Dal- las. She is entering her junior year at Dallas High School. Poepperling is the son of Anne and Dwayne Poepperling of Jackson Road, Shavertown. He is entering his junior year at Lake Lehman High School. Harding is the son of Brian and Dawn Harding of Upper Demunds Road, Dallas. He is entering his fresh- man year at Dallas High School.
