Students who earned their degrees at the end of the fall 2006 semester and those who will earn their degrees at the end of the sum- mer 2007 semester were also invited to participate in the ceremony. The ceremony began at 10 a.m. in the Athletics & Recre- ation Building. Anna Cerve- nak, chair of the campus ad- visory board, delivered the welcoming address. Class speaker was Melissa @. Steven Perzia, presi- nt of the campus Alumni Constituent Society, inducted graduates into the Penn State Alumni Society. Dr. Joyce M. Van Eck deliv- ered the commencement ad- dress. Dr. Van Eck is a Penn State Wilkes-Barre alumna and lead biogenetic researcher at the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research at Cornell University. A nationally recog- nized biogeneticist, Dr. Eck has been a part of the Interna- tional Tomato Genome se- quencing project, a consorti- um of 10 different countries working towards the goal of producing a genetically better tomato. Basak was presented with Yankees posters designed by his third-grade fans. The Joliet, lll. native told students about his background in baseball, as well as his role as a third baseman. Join the Relay for Life to defeat cancer In its fourth year, the Amer- ican Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of the Back Mountain will feature walkers who will go around the clock in the battle against cancer. This year’s Relay is dedi- cated to the memory of Rita Masley, Back Mountain resi- dent and long time, beloved employee of the Dallas School District. Teams will gather at Col- lege Misericordia’s Mangels- dorf Field at 5 p.m. on June 1 for an overnight relay against cancer. Relay For Life is a family-oriented team event where participants can walk relay-style around the track and take part in fun activities off the track. Teams can in- clude co-workers, club mem- bers, family and friends and have gathered donations prior to the event. The 2007 Back Mountain Relay For Life will have a Hollywood theme. Participa- nts can dress as their favorite Hollywood star and decorate their tents in Hollywood style.
