wT my L PAGE6 THE POST COMMUNITY Sunday, April 22, 2007 CIVIC BRIEFS Festival Committee schedules meeting The 2007 Dallas Harvest Festival Steering Committee will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 23, in the meeting room of the Dallas Borough Munici- pal Building, 25 Main Street. Committee members and sub-committee chairpersons are urged to attend for a group photo. Planning is currently under way for the fifth annual event, which will take place from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16, on Main Street. The steering committee is comprised of a team of dedi- cated volunteers who enjoy working together to plan activ- ities for the three-day “Dallas Days Weekend” (Sept. 14th-16th). Anyone with interest in be- coming more involved in the community is invited to attend this meeting. There are a variety of sub- committees that are now form- ing. Author luncheon to be held April 26 The Friends of the Back Mountain Memorial Library will hold its annual “Luncheon With a Special Author” begin- ning with a reception at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 26 at Apple- tree Terrace, Newberry Estate in Dallas. This year’s guest author will be Barbara Goldstein Kline, author of “White House Nan- nies.” The luncheon will start at 11:45 a.m. and Kline will begin her program at 1:15 p.m. For ticket information, call the library at 675-1182. Babysitting courses available at library The American Red Cross will hold a babysitting course from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 28 at the Back Mountain Me- morial Library. Boys and girls between the ages of 11-15 are invited to register. Interested participants must register in advance at the main desk of the library by present- ing a $40 program fee in cash or check made payable to the American Red Cross. Regis- trations will not be accepted the day of the class. Participants will learn to perform first aid and how to get professional medical help fast, identify common safety hazards and prevent injuries, perform basic care routines like diaper- ing, feeding, and dressing and handle bedtime issues and more. Arts YOUniverse plans Open Mic Night The Back Mountain Memo- rial Library and Dallas Harvest Festival Committee will co-host “Open Mic Night” at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, at Arts YOU- niverse-Dallas, 50 Lake Street. Previously known as “Word Horde,” the event originated as part of the first Dallas Days Weekend, in conjunction with the Dallas Harvest Festival, in September 2003. The event has continued to grow since and W averages approximately 35 attendees. Saturday’s “Open Mic Night” will be the ninth presentation. The April event will spotlight local talent, who will be invited to perform in a coffee house- type atmosphere. The events are dedicated to the performing arts, and will feature music, poetry, prose and monologue. Co-organizers for the events are Dallas Harvest Festival Committee member Rich Fufa- ro, and Back Mountain Memo- rial Library Circulation Coor- dinator Krista Connolly. Admission is free to the pub- lic, but pre-registration for those interested in performing is requested. Light refresh- ments will be served. Motorcycle show edad for April The 11th Annual Wyoming Valley Motorcycle Show to benefit Wyoming Valley Chil- dren’s Association will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sun- day, April 29, at the Kingston Armory. Proceeds from the event will benefit Wyoming Valley Chil- dren’s Association, a United Way agency which provides therapeutic services to children who have disabilities, including speech delays. The show will feature bikes and other merchandise from several area motorcycle dealers. Pocono Mountain Leather will present a biker-style fashion show at noon and 2 p.m. while food vendors and a face painter will also be at the show. The show is a People’s Choice Bike Show and all motorcycle owners and enthusiasts are invited to enter their bikes in the show at a cost of $10 per bike. Prizes will be awarded to the top five favorite motorcycles. Admission is $5 (children ages 10 years and under are admitted free) and the public is invited to attend.
