The Red Hot Divas also sent baked goods and multiple care packages to members of the mil- itary stationed in Iraq and other parts of the world. In the past the group has con- ducted fund-raisers for hurri- cane relief funds and sponsored needy families for Christmas in- stead of exchanging presents. The women also visit local nursing homes like The Mead- ows Nursing Center in Dallas on a regular basis. “We play bingo with the resi- dents,” Lanyon said. “Some ‘red hatters’ play cards; some don’t do anything that ben- efits charity, but we like to get in- volved in the community. I think we are the most community in- volved chapter in the Wyoming Valley.” For Easter, the group plans to donate Easter baskets or have an Easter egg hunt for the children at the Catherine McAuley House in Plymouth. The house provides tempora- ry housing for women and chil- dren who are in crisis for reasons other than abuse. Marlene Blackford of Moun- tain Top is the “Queen Mother” of the Red Hot Divas chapter, which basically means she is the president of the group. According to members of the chapter she was chosen because she is the most likeable woman in the group. To become a member of the Red Hat Society you must be a woman at least 50 years old (or you may be a Pink Hatter under 50), and you must attend func- tions in full regalia — a red hat and a purple outfit for women 50 and over, or pink hat and laven- der outfit for women under 50. Mary Lou Hines of Sweet Val- ley said she joined the chapter for the social aspect, as well as the charitable portion. “I've been here since the be- ginning,” Jean Scupski added. “I joined because I wanted to bond with my two daughters who are also members. I just en- joy being with these girls. We have a good time.” Located on Main Road in Sweet Valley "A Family Owned and Operated Personal Care Home That Offers That Personal Attention You Deserve."
