HELPING OTHERS NEVER GROWS OLD Each morning, Betty Friar wakes up, reads the newspaper and begins to knit robes for char- ity. Each lap robe takes approxi- mately 76 hours to complete, she said. And despite being 89 years old, Friar is still going strong. In the Aug. 6 issue, we told you the story of the Trucksville wom- an, who began knitting prior to the start of World War II. Friar do- nates most of her work to charity and is a member of the Knitting Bee, a group of women who meet each week at the Jewish Commu- nity Center. After undergoing bypass sur- gery several years ago, Friar knit- ted several hundred scarves and gave them to everyone who did a good deed for her when she was sick. KINGS OF THE COURT Although they were on differ- ent sides of the courtroom battle, the lead attorneys in one of the most high-profile murder trial in Luzerne County history had something in common - they’re both residents of the Back Moun- tain In the March 12 issue, we told you the stories of defense attor- ney Demetrius Fannick and pros- ecutor Jim McMonagle, who played major roles in the double- murder trial of Kingston Town- ship resident Hugo Selenski, who was eventually acquitted of the A os. : The Log Cabin on Rt. 118 ( 1 Mile West of Lehman Center) 675-4156 (Closed Tues.) * Mon, Wed & Thurs. 11AM-9PM Fri & Sat 11AM-10PM + Sun 2PM- 9PM i 1 Really Cooking Cafe & Catering We Will Ring in the New Year ot Each Seating with Hats, Noisemakers and Song. But most of all, we've written about people - the people who make our community a great place to live. murders. Fannick was born and raised in the Back Mountain, where he was a standout basketball player at Dallas High School in the early 1970s. he lives in Dallas Town- ship with his wife Mary Ann and their Maggie. McMonagle moved to the Back Mountain in 1993. In addition to his job, he’s well- known in the community as a longtime Little League umpire. The Johnstown native and his wife Julie live in Shavertown with their children, Courtney, Sean and Eryn. AN INSPIRATION TO ALL Despite an occasional road- block or detour, Tammy Stier has enjoyed the road she has traveled through married life — especially motherhood. And not even a potential obsta- cle on the horizon has stopped her from looking forward to the rest of the journey. In our May 14 issue on Moth- er’s Day, we told you the special story about the Stier family — par- ents Joe and Tammy, along with hI yf. 5 4 48 © ABs TO A their young children Samantha, Alex and Joey — of Dallas Town- ship and how they’ve coped with the news that doctors had found a tumor on Joe’s brain. The 31-year- old was scheduled to see a spe- cialist at Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City in mid- May. Through it all, the family has been an inspiration to fellow fam- ily members and members of the community. SUCCESS A REALITY FOR L-L GRAD Try One of Our Ras, Jay McCaroll says he doedgl} waste a lot of time dwelling on the past. But that doesn’t mean the Leh- man Township native — who has become a nationally-known fig- ure through his fashion designs and reality television — doesn’t take a few minutes every once in a while to reflect on his days growing up in the Back Moun- tain. In the Feb. 19 issue, we told you the story of McCarroll and how the 31-year-old was dealing with the fame of being named the win- ner of the Emmy Award-nominat- ed show “Project Runway” and living in New York City. When he wants to relax, the Lake-Lehman High School graduate returns to his home, which is located across from the school. The Bravo Channel produced a one-hour documentary special about the flamboyant son of Wil- liam and Nancy McCarroll. New Year's ne Specials!
