She was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre and lives with her daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Gordon Fairchild, in Sha- vertown. She is a retired teacher, having taught in many one-room schools. Tubridy also taught in the Wilkes-Barre public school system. She and her late husband Ray- mond were married for 69 years. She is a mem- ber of Trinity Presbyter- ian Church, Dallas. Clothing drive to benefit veterans Curves for Women in Shaver- town, in conjunction with the Dallas American Legion Ladies Auxiliary is holding the fourth annual Christmas Drive to col- lect clothing and other sundries for veterans at the Veterans Ad- ministration Medical Center in Plains Township. The following items may be dropped off at Curves for Wom- en, 161 Memorial Highway: T- shirts, sweatshirts, pants, sweat- ers, pajamas, socks, bedroom slippers, shaving cream, cologne, deodorant, toothpaste and tooth- brushes, candy, and monetary donations. Susan Stephens and Nancy Zumchak are co-chairwomen for the drive, with assistance from VA representative Marion Ku- Essay contest deadline nears Dallas American Legion Post 672 is holding its annual essay contest for high school students. The contest is held in con- junction with the 72nd annual contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania American Le- gion. The contest is open to all students who reside in the Back Mountain. This year’s topic is “How Can We Support Our Troops?.” There are monetary awards at the local and district levels. Scholarship awards are pre- sented to the three finalists in the final round of the state contest. The first place winner will receive a $3,500 scholarship, a plaque, and a trip to the Amer- ican Legion convention in July 2007 to read the winning es- say to the assembled dele- gates. The second place winner will receive a $3,000 scholar- ship and a plaque, while the third place winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship and a plaque. Interested students may contact their school office or call Dallas American Legion commander Clarence J. Mi- chael at 675-0488. All entries must be received by Jan. 7. The American Legion is al- so sponsoring a high school oratorical contest. The theme for year’s contest is “We The People.” The contest will con- sist of an 810-minute, memo- rized oration on some phase of the United States Constitu- tion and a 3-5-minute extem- pore oration on one of four topics assigned by the nation- al headquarters. The first place winner will receive a $7,500 scholarship, plaque, and a paid trip to the Pennsylvania American Le- gion State Convention to pre- sent the winning oration. The winner will also represent Pennsylvania in national and regional contests and receive an additional $1,500 scholar- ship from the national organi- zation. The second place winner will receive a $5,000 scholar- ship and a plaque, while the third place winner receives a $4,000 scholarship and a plaque.
