CLASS OF 1952 REUNITES The Westmoreland High School Class of 1952 recently celebrated its 54th anniver- sary reunion with several events over a three-day peri- od. Members of the class and their spouses got together for a pizza party, a picnic, and a breakfast. LOCAL DANCERS TO PERFORM IN HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR The Back Mountain campus of the Joan Harris Centre will hold the final performance of its 25th annual Halloween Spooktacular at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29 in the auditorium of Coughlin High School, North Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre. Hundreds of students from the Dallas studio will pool their talents with dancers from across the region to produce in the show. The show is the product of only eight lessons and features a variety of ballet, tap and jazz dances all set in a musical motif for the holiday. Tickets are $7. Legion holding essay contest The Dallas American Legion Post 672 is holding its annual es- say contest for high school stu- dents. The contest is held in conjunc- tion with the 72nd annual con- test sponsored by the Pennsylva- nia American Legion. The con- test is open to all students who reside in the Back Mountain. This year’s topic is “How Can We Support Our Troops?.” There are monetary awards at the local and district levels. Scholarship awards are present- ed to the three finalists in the fi- nal round of the state contest. The first place winner will re- ceive a $3,500 scholarship, a plaque, and a trip to the Amer- ican Legion convention in July 2007 to read the winning essay to the assembled delegates. The second place winner will receive a $3,000 scholarship and a plaque, while the third place winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship and a plaque. Interested students may con- tact their school office or call Dallas American Legion com- mander Clarence J. Michael at 675-0488. All entries must be re- ceived by Jan. 7. The American Legion is also sponsoring a high school orator- ical contest. The theme for year’s contest is “We The Peo- ple.” The contest will consist of an 8-10-minute, memorized ora- tion on some phase of the United States Constitution and a 3-5- minute extempore oration on one of four topics assigned by the national headquarters. The first place winner will re- ceive a $7,500 scholarship, plaque, and a paid trip to the Pennsylvania American Legion State Convention to present the winning oration. The winner will also represent Pennsylvania in national and regional contests and receive an additional $1,500 scholarship from the national or- ganization. The second place winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship and a plaque, while the third place winner receives a $4,000 schol- arship and a plaque. Noxen Library receives $10,000 grant for parking lot, improvements The Noxen Library will re- ceive a new parking lot and sev- eral building improvements, thanks to a $10,000 grant it re- cently received from Pennsylva- nia Department of Community and Economic Development. State Rep. George Hasay (R- Columbia/Luzerne/ Wyoming) made the announcement that United Methodist Community Development/Noxen Library has been awarded the grant. “This grant will help to pro- vide for need improvements at the library,” he said. “I'm happy that I was able to help in securi- ng the grant for such a fine com- munity organization.” Funding from the grant will be used toward parking lot paving and building improvements. The grant was awarded through the DCED Community Revital- ization Program.
