The building that houses the Back Mountain Memorial Li- brary was originally constructed in 1925. An underground spring runs nearby, resulting in damp- ness and water entering an area that the library relies on for much-needed storage and work space, as well as threatening the integrity of the building. “Water seepage in the library’s basement has caused slow but sure deterioration of the walls and floors, making the use of the space questionable,” said library board member Dick Evans. “The board found a company that has restored the basement area for functional use.” To pay for the necessary im- provements, the board is asking community members to help by purchasing $5 raffle tickets. An heirloom quality, hand-carved rocking horse, crafted by wood sculptor Matthew Borne is being offered as first prize. The second prize is a set of two tickets to the Penn State game against Temple on November 11; third prize is a family golf membership at New- berry Estates; fourth prize is a $300 gift certificate for Sew Fine Draperies and Interiors; and fifth prize is a $100 gift certificate for First prize is a hand-carved rocking horse by Matthew Borne. All other prizes will be awarded during the Thanksgiv- ing weekend. All proceeds from the raffle go be used for capital improvements and repairs need- ed to preserve the building. The Back Mountain Memorial Library serves nine municipal- ities and two school districts with trained staff, dedicated volun- teers, progressive children’s pro- grams and state-of-the-art tech- nology.
