In the late 1970s and early ‘80s, Kern was an assistant coach under Berwick head coach George Curry. Before that, he spent one season as an assistant coach at Clarion University. He served the last two seasons as an assistant under Myers. “I enjoy being with the kids,” he said. “They’re very energetic. I'm looking for- ward to the season.” Here's a brieflook at the Black Knights: QUARTERBACK: Senior Scott Davis — who transferred to Lake-Lehman last sea- son — has been locked in a battle for the starting job with Pollock since the first day of camp. Davis played quarterback in a pass-oriented offense at Clarion-Lime- stone for two seasons and is fa- miliar with reading multi- ple defenses. The 6- foot-2, 200-pound Pollock, howev- er, is a stron- ger runner ® and the more physical of the two. “It’s going to be a coin flip,” said Kern, five days before the season- opener against Wyoming Area. “They both can play. Scott has more experience with our kind of offense and Kenny is getting better at reading defenses. I'm sure they’ll both see time at quarterback this season.” RUNNING BACKS: One of many positions with inexperienced play- ers. Shurmanek, junior Mike Prater and sophomore Aaron Setzer will all see playing time at tailback — when the Black Knights use one. Shurmanek was the leading receiv- er on last year’s team. “There’s going to be many times when we’ll use just one back or no backs,” said Kern. “They know what their responsibility is going to be. They know it’s a team sport.” OFFENSIVE LINE: A unit that will try to overcome previous inju- ries and very little experience. Steele is the lone returning start- er on the offensive line. He will be joined at guard by senior Mike Pel- leschi, who suffered a knee injury last season. Sophomore Roger FOR THE POST/CHARLOTTE BARTIZEK Junior Kenny Pollock is one of the team leaders. Jayne, who played guard on the freshman team last year, will start at center, while the tackles will be junior Dan McHugh and freshman Cody Starck. McCue didn’t play last season because of a bad back. RECEIVERS: None of this year’s receivers has caught a passin a var- sity game. Kern will be counting on the play of sophomore Cody Lamo- reaux, freshman Cody Komrowski and first-year senior Joe Taylor. Lamoreaux and Komrowski are promising young players, while Kern says Taylor has been doing “surprisingly well” despite having never played be- fore. Senior Billy Holena will play tight end when the Black Knights employ one. DEFENSIVE LINE: Sophomore John Farrell will start at one of the defensive tackle positions in Lake-Lehman’s 5-0 defense. Steele and sophomore Joe Har- rison will both see playing time at tack- le. Junior Remington Boyd, who saw some playing time last season, will start at defensive end, along with either Ho- lena, sophomore Dean Kreidler or sophomore Dave Heller. Setzer will start at nose guard. LINEBACKERS: The Black Knights will start a pair of physical players at li- nebacker in Jayne and Prater. Neither one played on the varsity last year, but both have looked promising during the preseason. SECONDARY: Pollock — one of Lake- Lehman’s top tacklers last year as a sophomore — will start at strong safety and should be the leader of the defense. Senior Kevin Butler and Shurmanek will start at cornerback, while Lamo- reaux is the starting safety. Taylor and Komrowski will also see playing time in the defen- sive backfield.
