PAGE8 THE POST Sunday, August 20, 2006 COMMUNITY FESTIVAL DANCE BEING HELD SEPT. 15 AT IREM TEMPLE BOBACK NAMED HARVEYS LAKE CITIZEN OF THE YEAR The Harveys Lake Homecoming Committee honored Karen Boback as the 2006 Harveys Lake Citizen of the Year. The long- time resident of Harveys Lake received the award during a spe- cial ceremony held during the Harveys Lake Homecoming Weekend. She was presented the award for her efforts in service to community for more than 25 years. Harveys Lake council vice president Danny Blaine presented Boback with a commemora- tive plague. Boback has served as a volunteer with the Dallas Women of Rotary, the General Federation of Women's Club of Harveys Lake, and as president of The Back Mountain Library Board of Directors. She is a member of the Harveys Lake Protec- tive Association, and Junior League of Wilkes-Barre, Boback was also co-chairperson of the Harveys Lake Homecoming Committee. Musical entertainment will be provided by Eddie Day and the Original Starfires. Popular in the 1960s, the Starfires are most remembered for appearing at dances at Hanson's Amusement Park in Harveys Lake, where they performed with national talent, including Chubby Checker, Gary U.S. Bonds, and Franki Valli and the Four Seasons. The original band members are drummer Rich Gumbravich, bass player Roger Griffith, keyboardist Howard Dymond, vocalist Charlie McCuen, sax player Bob Gardner, vocalist Eddie Day and guitarist John B. Hall. Tickets for the dance are $25, and are available at Ochman’s Coin & Jewelry, 18 Church Street, Dallas, or at the Dallas Borough municipal building on Main Street. The ticket cost includes Ranch Wagon's famous foot-long hot dogs and pizza, beer, and soda. A cash bar will also be available. Mountain and surrounding communities attend the pig CHURCH BRIEFS Annual pig roast Being held Aug. 20 Back Mountain Harvest As- sembly Church will hold its annual pig roast at 1 p.m. Sun- day, Aug. 20 on the church cam- pus, 340 Carverton Road in Trucksville. There is no admis- sion charge. The event will also feature pony rides, inflatable toys, games and prizes, balloons and cotton candy. The Cross Walk Mobile Children’s Outreach will provide music and other activ- ities. For the adults, free massages will be offered, a blacksmith will demonstrate his craft, and the winner of The Most Awesome Tomato Contest will be crowned. This year’s menu includes pork cooked in the ground, corn-on-the-cob steamed over an open fire, plus a variety of hot and cold salads, vegetables, snacks, side dishes, desserts, and beverages. The food items are cooked and donated by the Harvest Assembly members and their families. Each year, approximately 1,000 people from the Back CE roast, which is held immediate- ly following the third church service. Prince of Peace sets rummage sale The Prince of Peace Episcopal Church will hold a rummage sale and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8 and Sat- urday, Sept. 9 at the church, 420 Main Street in Dallas. There is no admission charge or charge Men's breakfast held each Tuesday The Shavertown United Methodist Church recently began holding a weekly ecumen- ical men’s breakfast. The group meets at 8 a.m. each Tuesday at Pickett’s Charge restaurant on Route 415 in Dallas. The Dutch treat breakfast is followed by fellowship and a short devotion period. The breakfast, fellow- ship and devotion period last no longer than one hour. Men from all Back Mountain churches are encouraged to Center Moreland UMC holding corn roast The Center Moreland United Methodist Church will hold its Fun Day/Corn Roast at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20 at the church on Creamery Road in Center Moreland.
