Sunday, August 13, 2006 OBITUARIES THE POST PAGE7 ESTHER MARGARET (PEG) FASSETT Active in many community organizations Esther Margaret (Peg) Fas- sett of Lake Carey, Tunkhan- nock, and a resident of Fort Myers, Fla., surrounded by family, died peacefully at her Lake Carey home, on Saturday, July 29, 2006. Peg was born April 11, 1909, in Nicholson, Pa., to Oscar Jack and Bertha (Dix) Rey- nolds. She attended the public schools in Nicholson until her sophomore year, when she went to Trenton, N.J., and graduated from Trenton Sr. High School. She graduated from Mansfield State College (Normal School) and attended Penn State University. Peg taught school for two years in the Nicholson Schools. Alvah Fassett (of Tunkhannock) and eg were married at the Meth- odist Church in Montrose on June 14, 1930. Peg and Al had five children: John Benton Fassett, of Fort Myers, Fla.; Barbara Oski Beane, of Lake Carey; Judith Aydelott, of Franconia, N.H.; _ and, Frederick Godfrey Fas- sett, of Oakland, Calif. Their 8- year-old daughter, Margaret Jane Fassett, predeceased them in 1945. : Peg had a lifelong commit- ment to her community and was active in many civic and re- ligious organizations. For 25 years, she worked with the Girl Scouts of America as both a Scout and Brownie leader. She was the first den mother for the Tunkhannock Cub Scouts. Peg was a member of the Tunkhan- nock United Methodist Church, the Council of Minis- "tries, the United Methodist Women, the Wyoming County " Historical Society, the Tunk- hannock Women’s Club and the Tunkhannock Scholarship Fund. Peg was involved with the Tunkhannock Library from the time she moved into the house next door to its first loca- tion on Marion Street in 1930. Always an athlete and out- doorswoman, Peg loved to fly and earned her private pilot’s license in the 1940s. She was an “avid hunter and fisherman, and joined her husband in pursuing "these interests for over 60 “years. Peg was predeceased by her husband, as well as her brother, longtime Tunkhan- nock physician Dr. Oscar Lloyd aw Reynolds. & Private interment. Sandra Baird Dymond, 66, of East Overbrook Road, Shaver- town, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006 in her home. Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Mal- com G. and Eudora Gay Baird. She was a graduate of Dallas Township High School, Class of 1958, and a 1961 graduate of the Wilkes-Barre General Hos- pital School of Nursing. She was also a graduate of the Wilkes-Barre General Hos- pital School of Anesthesia. Sandra worked at several hospitals in the New York and New Jersey areas, returning to Pennsylvania in 1981. Upon returning, she was em- ployed as a registered nurse su- pervisor at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Sandra re- tired from the VNA in 2001. Sandra was a member of the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital Alumni Association, where she served as past secretary and a member of the Valley Lady Bugs Red Hat Society. Mrs. Dy- mond was also a member of the Orange United Methodist Church and its Cheerio Class. She was also a lay leader, a member of the choir and on the administrative board of the church. Surviving is her husband, Larry; stepsons Lauren Dy- mond, New Market, Md.; Tim- othy Dymond, Luzerne; broth- ers Malcom and his wife, Be- verlee, Leola, Pa.; Arthur and his wife, Marie, Shavertown; sister Marjorie Kishbaugh, Dallas; aunts Ruth Robert and her husband, Edgar, Kingston; Janet Ohman and her husband, Harvey, Cleveland, Ohio; uncle Ronald Rogers, Wilkes-Barre; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. SISTER MARY CAROLYN LEGUTKO Entered Sisters of Mercy, Dallas in 1927 Sister Mary Carolyn Legut- ko, 95, a member of the Dallas Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Amer- icas, died Thursday, July 27, 2006, at Mercy Center, Dallas. The former Margaret Cathe- rine Legutko was born July 2, 1911, in Port Carbon, and was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Stella (Otfinowski) Legut- ko. She entered the Sisters of Mercy at Dallas on Dec. 8, 1927, and made her profession of vows on Aug. 16, 1930. Sr. Carolyn excelled in food preparation and administra- tion of a kitchen, producing three meals daily. Because of her expertise in the culinary arts, she served her Sisters of Mercy in many convents in the dioceses of Scranton, Harrisburg and Rockville Centre, N.Y., and Brooklyn, N.Y. She was in charge of the _ commuter student’s dining room at College Misericordia from 1951 to 1963. Sr. Carolyn prepared meals at St. Mary’s Convent from 1965 to June 1972, when the Agnes flood caused the Sisters of Mercy to move to Mercy Center, Dallas. At Mercy Center, Sister Car- olyn continued her ministry to the Sisters by serving as cook and dining room attendant un- til illness forced her retirement to the prayer ministry in 1992. She was preceded in death by her brothers, John, Thomas, Peter, Paul, Valentine, Francis and Joseph Legutko. Surviving are her sisters, Theresa Vigoda and Dorothy Stancavage, Port Carbon; a brother, Sylvester Legutko, Port Carbon; nieces, nephews and the Sisters of Mercy of the Dallas Regional Community Interment, St. Mary’s Ceme- tery in Hanover Township. BARBARA JENKINS Longtime Tunkhannock resident Barbara Jenkins, 81, of Tunk- hannock, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital in Wilkes-Barre. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Jen- kins. Born in Kingston, Pa., on Feb. 6, 1925, she was a daugh- ter of the late Leslie and Har- riet (Friant) Bush. She was employed at the United Rehabilitation center in Tunkhannock, where she re- tired after 20 years. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert and Donald Friant. She is survived by her two sons, David Jenkins, of Wilkes- Barre, and Tom Jenkins, of Ca- sa Grande, Ariz. Interment, Memorial Shrine Cemetery in Carverton. MARVIN OSCAR DYMOND Former member of Shavertown Fire Co. Marvin Oscar Dymond, 79, of Middletown, died Thurs- day, Aug. 3, 2006 at home. He retired from Cleveland Brothers Equipment Compa- ny after 42 years of employ- ment. He also served as a member of the Shavertown Fire Com- pany for 17 years, prior to be- ing transferred to Harrisburg. Mr. Dymond was a past member of the George M. Dallas F&AM Lodge; The Caldwell Consistory of Bloomsburg; and the Irem Temple Shrine, Wilkes-Barre. He is survived by his three sons, Robert S. Dymond and his wife, Sandy; and Kenneth D. Dymond and his wife, Kathi, all of Lower Swatara Township; and Marvin Paul and his fiancée, Cindy, of Boiling Springs; five grand- children and seven great- grandchildren. Former resident of Sorber Mountain Ronald D. May Sr., 68, for- merly of Sorber Mountain (Noxen), entered into eternal rest on Friday, July 28, 2006, at Kingston Commons, King- ston. Mr. May was born in Ross Township, Sept. 17, 1937, and was a son of the late Wilbur E. and Nellie (Hummel) May. He attended Laketon School at Harveys Lake. He was employed by B.G. Coon/Coon Industries for 38 years. His loving wife, the former Lillian Walton, preceded Ro- nald into eternal rest in 1996. His son, Ronald May Jr., also preceded him in death. Kashinsky, of Tunk- hannock, a devoted wife and mother whose humor and compassion made her the glue that held her family together, died Saturday, July 29, 2006 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, after a brief illness. Born Lori Delphine Modze- lewski in Staten Island, she lived in 13 different homes be- fore settling in Tunkhannock in 1987. Lori graduated from St. Francis High School on Staten Island. She became a li- censed practicing nurse after graduating the Wilkes-Barre Vocational Technical School with honors in 2002. Mrs. Kashinsky met her hus- band, Bob, in Atlantic City, N.J., in 1975. They wed at St. Anthony’s RC Church, Staten Island, on Jan. 19, 1977, and re- newed their vows in 2000 at the Nativity Blessed Virgin Mother RC Church, Tunkhan- nock, where they were parish- ioners. After raising her three sons, Robert Jr., Peter and Pa- trick, Mrs. Kashinsky worked for almost 13 years as a photog- rapher and later a columnist for the New Age Examiner (Tunkhannock), beginning in the late 1980s. In 1997, she became a free- lance photographer, taking portrait photos as well as shooting weddings and family gatherings. In 1996, Lori and her husband opened Kashin- sky’s Floor Store, where they sold and her husband installed carpets, tiling and linoleum for residents and businesses in Tunkhannock. She was a for- mer member of the Profession- al Business Woman's Associ- ation. She enjoyed playing the accordion and harmonica and often entertained family and friends with rousing perform- ances during her annual Thanksgiving dinners. Mrs. Kashinsky loved to eat and serve up great meals for her family and was very proud of her Polish heritage. Lori is survived by her hus- band, Robert Sr.; her sons, Rob- ert Jr., Peter and Patrick; her daughter-in-law, Tanya Kashin- sky; her father, Peter Modze- lewski; and her sisters, Rita Thatcher, Susan Scasny and Dale Turner. JAMES THOMAS Avid golfer, decorated Marine James Thomas, 73, of Har- veys Lake, passed away Mon- day, Aug. 7, 2006 at his home from leukemia. Born on March 27, 1933, he was a son of the late Morgan and Dorothy (Steevers) Tho- mas. He was a graduate of For- ty Fort High School and had at- tended the University of Alaba- ma and Wilkes College. He was a former meat manager at Shop Rite Markets, Kingston, retiring in the late 1980s. Mr. Thomas was active in re- tirement until the final stages of his illness. He was an avid golfer and frequent visitor to Atlantic City. Mr. Thomas also organized the first Marine re- union of Stable Able One Sev- en in 1993. He and his dog, Woofer, were a familiar neigh- borhood sight, taking their dai- ly walk to the lake. Mr. Thomas served with the United States Marine Corps in Korea. In 1952, he was awarded two Purple Hearts for wounds received in combat. He also re- ceived the Marine Combat Ac- tion Medal; the Republic of Ko- rea Presidential Unit Citation; the Good Conduct Medal; the Republic of Korea War Service Medal, with two bronze stars; the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon; and the Marine Corps Sharpshooter Rifle Badge. He was preceded in death by his sister Shirley Bonnice; and brother Morgan Thomas. Sur- viving are his wife, the former Anne Gallagher; sons James, Hunlock Creek; Steven, Atlan- ta, Ga.; daughter Kathi McCaf- frey, Middletown, R.I.; Diane Thomas, Swoyersville; sister Lois Stout, Levitown, Pa.; brother William Thomas, Ber- wick; grandchildren Joshua and Mark Thomas; John, Ryan and Neil McCaffrey; Jade Lynn Levi; several nieces and neph- ews.
