I try to gather all of the information so the school board can make in- formed decisions.” DK: Do you miss the day-to- day interaction you had with the students when you were a prin- cipal? FG: “I miss the kids. I love the kids. I try to go to at least one building a day, whether it’s Dal- las or Wycallis elementary, the middle school, or the high school. I want the kids to see me and to know me.” DK: How has district changed since you came here in 1982? . FG: “First of all, kids and par- ents have changed. I believe the key to being a good administra- tor is to change with the stu- dents and with the times. You al- so have to try to attract the best staff possible to deal with those changes.” DK: You say kids and parents have changed. How so? FG: “First, let me say that Dal- las has many, many outstanding parents who have always been supportive. In the late ‘90s, when the Parent-Teacher Stu- dent Organization became so active in the high school — they helped with the (graduation night) lock-in, the Students of the Month and Students of the Quarter — I felt that was a big turning point in the district. It tied the community in with the school. “As far as the changes, it’s dif- ficult when kids have a father, a mother, stepfathers, stepmoth- ers, and multiple family arrange- ments. There are kids who are independent and do things on their own. They have little fam- ily structure. In the old days, ev- eryone sat down at the dinner table and talked about their days. That doesn’t happen in too many families today. People have busy lives.” DK: You're a former standout athlete who continues to offici- ate football and baseball games, what role has sports played in your professional life? FG: “Sports have given me a tremendous perspective of — RR TR RR Sicilian LR LB lf, a Esl 16 CARVERTON RD., TRUCKSVILLE Mon. - Wed. 4-10 PM Thurs. 4-11 PM « Fri. | IAM-11 PM Sat. 12:30 - 11 PM * Sun.2 - 10 PM “You're also dealing with things like bud- gets, and many other things all fall on your shoulders. The contact with players and coaches has given me the oppor- tunity to solve problems. We can sit down and figure out how we can work together to solve a problem.” DK: What’s harder, dealing with a school board or football and baseball coaches? FG: (Laughs) “Everyone has a unique personality. A successful administrator can deal with them simultaneously.” DK: The taxpayers in the dis- trict are facing a tax increase of 22 mills. Are the students in the district receiving a quality edu- cation for the money? FG: “Most definitely. I really feel the kids are getting a quality education. I think the taxpayers are going to be one of our stron- gest allies when we get ready to make the (construction) pro- posal. We're going to need their support and understanding. I look at it as a tremendous op- portunity. We're going to need the support of the taxpayers in the district.” DK: What's the biggest chal- lenge facing Dallas School Dis- trict? FG: “I think one is getting ev- eryone on the same page about the future in regards to con- struction. The other is facing our mission — to provide an ex- cellent education for our stu- dents.
