Refresh- ments will follow. Parent-Teacher group set events at GOH The Gate of Heaven Parent Teacher Group will hold two back-to-school events for the 2006-07 school year. Family members of all registered students are invited to attend “Back to School Night” on Thursday, Sept. 7 at the school on Machell Avenue in Dallas. The time of the event will be announced at a later date. There will be a PTG meet- ing, followed by classroom breakouts, introducing parents to their student’s classroom, homeroom teacher, and up- coming academic pursuits. Parents of all students — in- cluding those in the preschool, elementary and middle school — are encouraged to attend. An ice cream social will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10 at the school. The event is open to current and prospective students and families. Teachers, staff and parents will be on hand to scoop ice cream and greet families. Children’s activities are also being planned. All parents of Gate of Heav- en students, teachers and staff are automatically members of the Gate of Heaven PTG. Members interested in helping in the event planning are en- couraged to attend a meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21 at the middle school. Fire chiefs compete to Kiss the Pig’ Fire chiefs of five Back Moun- tain volunteer fire departments are participating in the annual Kiss the Pig competition. The contest is being held as part of the Dallas Harvest Festival, which will be held Sunday, Sept. 17 on Main Street in Dal- las. The contestants for this year’s Kiss The Pig contest are Harry Vivian, Dallas; Jack Dod- son, Kunkle; Dennis Bonning, Lehman Township; Gary Beisel, Shavertown; and Bill Eck, Trucksville. Bright, pink, labeled ballot jars and posters are located at various locations throughout the Back Mountain, specifically stores and businesses along routes 309, 415, 118. Local resi- dents may purchase as many $1 ballots as they wish through Sept. 17. Ballot jars will also be available during the festival. The identity of the winning “kisser” will be announced at the festival by District Magist- rate James Tupper, who will witness the kissing of “Rocco Rooter,” a potbelly pig owned by 4-H educator Marge Bart of Dallas. Half of the money collected will be donated to the winning chief’s fire department, while the other half will be used to defray the cost of next year’s festival. Last year’s winner was State Sen.
