PAGE 14 THE POST SPORTS Sunday, June 25, 2006 tars ready to shine in annual game - By DAVE KONOPKI Post Editor DALLAS — More than a quarter of a century ago, the Dallas Kiwa- nis Club wanted to do something to recognize the softball talent in the Wyoming Valley Conference. And the Kiwanis All-Star Soft- ball Game was born. The 27th annual event will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 26 at WW. Kubis Memorial Field on Church Road in Dallas. The game features the top senior soft- ball players in the WVC. For fans who would like to see the players warm up, the West team will practice from 5:20-5:50 p.m., while the East will practice from 5:50-6:20 p.m. “Back in the 1970s, there were all-star games for sports like foot- ball, baseball and basketball, but nothing for softball,” explained longtime Dallas Kiwanis Club member Robert Dolbear. “(For- mer Lake-Lehman coach) Flossie Finn approached us and asked if the club would be willing to orga- nize an all-star team for softball. We've continued the game every year since.” The two Back Mountain high schools will be represented at the game. Sara Swepston will repre- sent Dallas, while Lake-Lehman is sending a host of players in She- ree Horvath, Sarah Navin, Jackey Hettes, and Jill Chocallo. The Dallas and Lake-Lehman players are members of the West team. Other members of the West team are Bethany Bosak, North- — TIMES LEADER FILE PHOTO/PETE G. This year’s chairman is Rich Heister. “We make sure the field is ready, we get the umpires and make sure everything is organized. But we also get a lot of cooperation from the coaches in the league.
