The annual contest is open to public, private, and home-schooled students in the Dallas and Lake-Lehman school districts. The theme of this year’s contest was “Let Freedom Ring.” Essay contest participants and family members were honored during a breakfast at the Post Home. Clarence Michael served as the essay chairman, as well as the master of ceremonies. This year’s judges were Kep Gottshalk, Steve Batory, John Oliver and Michael. Boyle received a $300 savings bond and will compete in an inter-district competition. The second place winner was Christopher Jayne of Dallas High School, who received a $ 250 savings bond and a second place medal. Lake-Lehman's Bryan Cardillo was the third-place winner and received a $100 savings bond and medal. Honorable mention awards were given to Dallas students Kristen Thompson, Rosemary Shaver and Kyle Baines all who attend the Dallas School District. They each received a $50 savings bond. AT DIETRICH THEATER Ventriloquist Susan Klein will give a performance of “Everybody's Beauti- ful" at 1 a.m. Saturday, April 8 at the Dietrich Theater in Tunkhannock. The public is invited and there is no admission charge. Klein will introduce her family of puppet friends, including animal characters. The performance is designed for children and their families. A medical technologist for the last 34 years, Klein has been a ventriloquist since 1995 and has won numerous awards. Summer Fun Night at Dallas Elementary The Dallas Elementary School will hold “Summer Fun Night” from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 26 in the school cafeteria. For more information, call the admissions office at 740-0337 or 1-800-377- 5222, ext. 337. ‘Goodfellas’ art director to visit PSU W-B Wyoming Valley native and in- ternationally-known motion picture set designer Maher Ah- mad will be on the campus of Penn State Wilkes-Barre at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30 to kick- off the “Film, Food and Fun Facts” series. The event, which is open to the public, looks at the contribution of Northeastern Pennsylvanians have made to the film industry. Ahmad, a Forty Fort native, will be present for the screening of “Goodfellas,” starring Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci and Paul Sorvi- no. Ahmad was the art director for the Academy award-winning production. He will discuss the making of the film and answer audience questions. The series is offered in the spring and fall at Penn State Wilkes- Barre and is moderated by Penn State communication arts in- structor Bill Bachman. The cost is $10 per film for adults; $5 per film for students. All screenings are held at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays in the science building on the campus in Lehman Township. Gardening course available at college College Misericordia is offering non-credit course that will give students of all ages an opportu- nity to develop a green thumb for gardening. The Garden of Possibilities course allows students to discov- er the tools that are needed to build a greener, healthier lawn, plant and maintain colorful flow- er beds and how to properly care for various plants. Students also will learn about fertilizers and chemicals, soil testing and the lifecycle of root-eating grubs. The six-week will be held from 6-8 p.m. each Wednesday from April 19 through May 24 in the MacDonald Art Gallery. The in- structor is Barbara Anderson and the course costs $60.
