The Parent Teacher Student Or- ganization of Dallas High School recently held its annual Thanks giving coat drive. New and gently- used coats were collected and do- nated to the Luzerne County Com- mission on Economic Opportuni- ty. “We donated nearly 300 coats this year,” said Sharen Duddy, a PTSO steering committee mem- ber who co-chaired the program with Debbie Danko. “This has been the best response we've had over the last several years.” In addition to the high school’s efforts, the PTO at Wycallis Ele- mentary School also held a coat drive during American Education Week. Parents were invited to drop off donations while attending vari- ous school activities, including parent conferences and the second grade’s hoedown. “Whycallis’ PTO had a very suc cessful collection this year, also,” said Duddy. The PTSO steering committee “ organizes the coat drive and other such activities as one of its goals is to provide students with opportu- nities to perform community ser- vice. Each morning of the coat drive, members of Dallas Key Club and Students Against Destructive Decisions were on hand to help with the collection. Students Ryan Duddy, Eric Dan- ko and Andrew Judge helped deliv- er the coats to the CEO. They sort- ed the coats and hung them on racks according to size. “It feels better to be here doing something nice for people instead of being in gym class,” said sopho- more Andrew Judge. Needy families from the area were invited by the CEO to pick up a Thanksgiving food basket in ad- dition to two coats per family. M.B. Gilligan MEDITATION Continued from Page 1 ery week. The advantages she has seen in practitioners have ranged from better health and sleeping patterns to a wider sense of where people are in the world and what they find important. “At the sound of the bell all thinking stops,” was an old Zen saying, she said, but it meant practitioners stopped thinking about the issues of ordinary life and looked at the deeper levels of the mind. She told of a woman medita- tor who had survived cancer, and had come to realize ro ® her meditating that living ea day to the fullest was the most important thing she could do in order to balance her life.
