Ha he Wyoming Valley Confer- ence high school golf season got under way this week, with several Back Mountain private school students helping to lead their respective teams to victories against Dallas and Lake-Lehman. The defending champion Bishop Hoban golf team edged out a 199-205 win against Dallas on Wednesday at the Wilkes-Barre Golf Club, thanks to the efforts of Dallas residents Jeff Clemente, Brandon Wills, Mike Clemente and Greg Nothstein. Steve Sabol led Dallas, while Ryan Fran- coni, Joe Bevevino, Adam King and Scott Grundowski were the other low scorers for the Mountaineers. Earlier in the week, Trucksville resident Zach Aciukewicz carded a low score of 39 to lead Bishop O'Reilly to a 179-205 win against Lake-Lehman. Shavertown resi- dent Dan Gosart was the third lowest scorer for the Queensmen. Lake-Lehman was led by Chris Jones, Justin Eimers, Steve Cornia and Brian Car- dillo. SPORTS BRIEFS Soccer team sets Meet the Team Night The Dallas High School boys soccer team will hold its annual Meet the Team Night at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1 at the high school. All parents, family members and supporters of Dallas soccer are encouraged to attend. Newberry ladies hold golf outing The Newberry Ladies Golf League recently held its August outing at the Emanon Golf Course in Falls with a captain and crew format. The winning teams were: Micky Aicher, Terry Cook, Mary Moran and Helen Davis, first place; and Janet Dent, Joyce Mallory, Alice Niskey and Marie Kruska, second place. Romaine Kunkle and Connie Brewer were co- chairwomen of the event. The September outing will be held Sept. 23 at Morgan Hill Golf Course in Hunlock Creek. League members should contact Nancy Brown or Peg Mihalick to register. Registration set for DYB league Dallas Youth Basketball will hold registration for its boys and girls winter leagues from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the Wycallis Elementary School. Players in grades 3 through 8 who reside in the Dallas School District are eligible. All players will be required to participate in a fund-raiser with a buyout option. Bret Wanek scored three touch- downs as the Dallas Junior Mounts B team defeated Kingston Township, 22-6, on Sunday after- noon at Mountaineer Stadium in a Wyoming Valley West Youth Foot- ball season-opener for both teams. Wanek scored on touchdowns runs of 40 and 62 yards, and also pulled in a 55-yard pass reception. The Raiders played well despite the loss, with David Gawlas scor- ing on a 71-yard run in the third quarter. Quincy Patrick and Neil Shaver also ran the ball well for Kingston Township, while Justin Rivero, Chris Ostrum, Luke Ed- wards and Robbie Boedecker played well on the defensive side of the ball. C Division Kingston Township 4 Dallas 8 Corey Patrick and Jesse Shaffer combined to rush for more than 175 yards and Patrick added two touchdown runs to lead the Raid- Wanek, Patrick, Shaffer, Gattuso shine in openers ers. Shaffer added a two-point con- version run. The offensive line of Mike Ole- nginski, J.T. Carey, Kyle Kotulski, Josh Weaver, Domenic Oliveri, Joe Stier and Ed Meszczynski opened holes on both scoring drives while Carey and Matt Doggett added two sacks each defensively. Pa- trick and Weaver were named of- fensive players of the game, while Omar Nijmeh and Shaffer were named defensive players of the game for the Raiders. For Dallas, Ryan Zapoticky con- nected with Nick Luzetski on a 41- yard touchdown pass and John Hutchins added the two-point conversion run. D Division Kingston Township 14 Dallas O Tanner Gattuso rushed for two touchdowns and a two-point con- version as the Kingston Township Raiders defeated the Junior Mounts. The Kingston Township offensive line of Ryan Martin, Mitch Kelly, Jason Anderson and Ray Anthony Ostroski provided key blocks throughout the game. Defensively, the Raiders were able to hold the Mounts scoreless, led by the play of Ryan Martin, Ja- son Anderson and Ricky Morgan, Peter Capitaino, Kyle Piskorik, David Edwards and Bret Stors.
