PAGE6 THE POST NEWS Sunday, August 21, 2005 A REUNION Continued from Page 1 Tom and Sandy Morris. Com- bined with family and friends of the students, more than 60 peo- ple attended the reunion. “We were like family,” said Franklin, referring to her fellow students at the one-room school- house in Ceasetown. “The stu- dents really felt close to each oth- er. It was a hard life, but it was a wonderful life.” In addition to the one in Cease- town, other one-room school- houses — home to students in grades one through eight — in Jackson Township were the Rome School and the Oakdale School. After finishing the eighth grade, most of the students at- tended either Harter High School in West Nanticoke or Leh- man High School. “The teachers were very nice to us,” recalled Gmiter. “I remem- ber having parties at Christmas and on Valentine’s Day. At the end of the school year, we'd al- ways have a picnic at someone’s house. Everyone made a covered dish, the teacher would pick up all of the food in a car and the kids would walk to the school. We re- ally were happy.” Unlike in today’s public schools, students in one-room schoolhouses began their day with a Bible reading, a prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, and by sing- ing songs such as America The Beautiful or My Country “Tis of Thee. “We always saluted the flag, said our prayers and sang patriot- ic songs,” said Franklin. “I feel terrible that children aren’t al- lowed to do those things today. If you don’t have faith in God and (pride) in our country, what do you have? You have to learn those things while you're little.” Cragle remembers sneaking rides on the back of a covered wagon with some friends as a way to get to school. “Sometimes the guy would catch us,” said the 77-year-old, with a laugh. “We had no lights or water in the school. The teacher had to start the furnace every morning. I can’t complain. Those were the good old days.” With students in grades one through eight sharing the same room, things got a little crowded. klin, whose mother, Victoria Maude Bulford, was a teacher ina one-room schoolhouse during the early 1900s at Ceasetown, ‘Rome, East Dallas and West Dal- las. “While they were being taught, the rest of the class stud- ied.” And while the students had a good time, things rarely got out of hand, says Gmiter. “The kids back then paid atten- tion,” she said. “They were re- spectful and very good to the teachers.” A fourth reunion is being planned for next year and Fran- klin is already looking forward to it. “We started doing this so ev- eryone could get together,” she said. “We have such fond memo- ries. So many of our classmates are dead. So many are gone. We want to keep this going.” TIMES LEADER STAFF PHOTO/FRED ADAMS | Hedy Zbick and Leona Mizdail take a look at their fortune cookies during a reunion of one-room schoolhouse students. © CROSSWORD CORNER But everyone received an educa- This turn-of-the-century 40-by-180-foot three story gambrel on Mount Olivet Road will be the site of a May wedding. The reception will also be held in the barn, with a band and danc- ing. The wedding ceremony will take place on a second-story level beneath three barn windows that are tucked into the gambrel peak of the barn. “At first we were concerned about putting people out by com- ing this far from New York,” Kle- ban said. “But we will have the buses going back and forth from an area hotel quite often and it will be like something out of the pages of Vogue.” Kleban and her husband-to-be aren’t the only ones excited. “It’s like it’s my wedding,” said Allison Friedman. “Tm excited and nervous, hoping for good weather I think I may even get stressed out.” The Freidmans are also in the process of purchasing a church “FREE DELIVERY" (Retail Price Only) 6 Yards or more in the Wyoming Valley 8/12/05 - 9/12/05 Thomas Landscape Management 570-288-7002 , ”~ A 2 ¢ Twin Sets .
