DISTRICT 16 SENIOR LEAGUE SOFTBALL Harveys Lake Irls win title BY DAVE KONOPKI Post Staff It has been more than decade since the Harveys Lake Little League organization has been able to fly a new championship softball flag over the field on West Point Avenue. But thanks to some quality hitting, a solid defense and a good attitude, the wait is over. The Harveys Lake Senior League softball team recent- ly captured the District 16 championship with a pair of wins against Wyoming/West Wyoming, including a 13-5 victory in the title contest. Harveys Lake opened the tourney with a forfeit win against Northwest before posting an impressive 13-1 win against Wyoming/West Wyoming. Harveys Lake had defeated Northwest and Wyoming/ West Wyoming during the regular season. It also beat a team from Back Mountain that did not enter the tourney. “We felt coming in that we had as good a shot (to win the championship) as anyone else,” said manager Wayne Devine. “For most of these girls, this is probably the last year they’ll play. So I think winning a championship makes it a little more special for them. Even though there were only three teams in the tournament, it was nice to come out on top. “I think we're hitting a lot better than we did the last two years. The girls are also a little older. Other than that, there really isn’t much of a difference between this year’s team and teams in previous years.” But this year’s team is also going into rare territory. By winning the district championship, Harveys Lake earned a berth in the Section 5 playoffs, where the winner of the double-elimination tournament will earn a trip to the state playoffs. The team opened sectional play with a game against Stroudsburg at the Jessup Little League complex in Jessup. It marks Harveys Lake’s first trip to any section playoff game since its Senior League baseball team won the district championship in 1999. In this year’s district title game, Ramah Williams and Megan Devine each hit three-run triples and Marteen Besteder went 4-for-5 for Harveys Lake. Lauren Litchman added three hits and Devine picked up the mound win, striking out six in seven innings. Devine has handled most of the pitching duties for See SOFTBALL, Page 8 Dallas leads Division II softball all-stars The Wyoming Valley Conference girls softball all-stars were recently selected during a meeting before the senior all-star game.
