Tue POST Sunday, June 19, 2005 7 SportsWeek BACK MOUNTAIN BASEBALL Championship -games on tap Back Mountain Baseball, Inc. will hold its major league baseball and soft- ball championship games this week at W.W. Kubis Memorial Field. In baseball, the National League title game will be played today at 5:30 p.m., while the American League championship game is set for today at 8 p.m. The overall cham- pionship game is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday. In softball, the major league championship game will be played at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Here are results from recent games: Rangers 8, Yankees 1 Winning pitcher Zach Dirsa struck out 10 batters and walked none over 4 innings and helped his own cause with four hits and four RBI. Shane Dunn added three hits, including a double, and John McCarthy had two hits. Kevin Muldoon and Adam Goeringer each had a hit for the Yankees. Rangers 10, Phillies O Stephen Ruch and Travis DeBona combined on a two-hitter to lead the Rangers. Ruch picked up the win, strik- ing out seven as the Rangers clinched the American League regular season championship. DeBona led the offense with three hits, including a double. Ruch, John McCarthy and Jordan Stephens each had two hits and two RBI. Jordan Thomas laced a triple for the Phillies. Rangers 10, Dodgers 2 Zach Dirsa pitched five strong innings, striking out 10, as the Rangers won a game between first-place teams. Stephen Ruch hit a two-run home run and added a double to finish with four RBI. Travis DeBona had three hits, while Shane Dunn added a triple. Andrew Sabol had the lone hit for the - Dodgers. Pitchers Austin Carr and Hayden Jenkins combined to strike out 12 despite the loss. HL Maroons 4, Pirates 3 Troy Shrurites and Selena Adamshick both went 2-for-2 and each threw three strikeouts on the mound for Harveys Lake. Louis Oley hit a single in the bot- tom of the sixth inning to score Garett Barber and Josh Ford for the victory. Ringsdorf, Fulton, Dillion, and Noyalis all had hits for the Pirates. Matt Ruch started the season with a two- hit shutout over Swoyersville, 3-0. He also picked up the win over Plains, 13-5. Myer Messinger contributed two wins on the mound, over Valley, 7-2 and Nanticoke, 13- 7. Pat Murray picked up a win out of the bullpen against Tunkhannock as the Junior Hawks rallied for three runs in the last inning to win 8-7. Rounding out the six games was Bobby Peron’s victory over Mountain Top, 11-1. The leading hitters for Back Mountain early this season have been Doug Harding, Chris Klaiss, Mike Prater, Scott Skammer and Ruch. This is only the sec- ond year for Back Mountain to have a team in the Wyoming Valley Junior Legion League. They finished in third place last year. The team is managed by Steve Skammer along with coaches Ted Ruch and Mark Shaver. YOUTH FOOTBALL CAMPS Dallas High School A three-day camp for players age 6-13 will be held at Dallas High School July 11- 13, from 9 a.m. to noon each day. The camp is run by Dallas coach Ted Jackson and his staff, assisted by current and former players. They finished with a 2-10 record playing teams from Montoursville; Mahwah, N.J.; and Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Boys basketball camp at Misericordia College Misericordia will host a Basketball School for Boys this summer in the Anderson Sports-Health Center. Their will be two sessions, June 20-24 and July 4-8, under the direction of CM head coach Trevor Woodruff. Boys age 8 to 15 may enroll. Loaned fishing gear is now available at Frances Slocum Frances Slocum State Park is now an official Fishing Tackle Loaner site. The public can come to the park’s contact station, 565 Mt. Olivet Road, Friday thru Sunday between 1 and 8 p.m. and borrow rods, reels and a tackle box full of hooks and other “tackle. The equipment is borrowed in much the same way books are borrowed from a library. Those wanting to borrow gear complete a form and the loan is made. At the end of the loan period the equipment is returned to the site. This pilot program is a partnership between the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the American Sportfishing Association, and Frances Slocum State Park. The program is designed to make it easy for anyone to access fish- ing tackle. This equipment may also be loaned to groups con- ducting angler education programs in the community. There is no charge. : For additional information, contact Frances Slocum State Park at 696-3525 and on weekends 696-4997 from 1 to 8 p.m. SWEET VALLEY LITTLE LEAGUE Pike Creek Site wins championship The Sweet Valley Major League baseball team, sponsored by Pikes Creek Site Contractors, defeated C&M Sanitation & Son 6-5 in extra innings to win the Northwest Area Little League championship on June 11 at the Al Flora Jr. Field. Pikes Creek Site finished the regular season with an 15-1 record and has compiled a 32-2 record dating back to 2004 to go along with back-to-back championships. All of the Pikes Creek Site players reside in Ross Township. The team is coached by Mark LeValley, Harold Cornell, Joe Romanofski, Jim King and Bryan Mathers.
