10 The Dallas Post SCHOOL Sunday, May 15, 2005 GOH leaders in forensics Three forensics teams from the Gate of Heaven School, Dallas, placed in the Diocesan Forensics Tournament, the final competition in a string of foren- sics battles which were held over the course of March and April. Starting with 27 teams, Gate of Heaven held its in-school tournament to decide which six teams would represent the school in the regional tourna- ment, at which five earned places in the diocesan tourna- ment, held on April 30 at Seton Catholic in Pittston. Two teams from Gate of Heaven's varsity team and one team from the junior varsity placed in the final competition. The two varsity teams were comprised of students Colleen Leahigh, Casey Hampsey, Serena Fulton, and Conor Harrington, while Nathan Albrecht, Stephen Ruch, and Kyle Wesley manned the junior varsity. DHS 2005 Grad Lock-in meeting The Dallas High School Grad Lock-in committee will meet on Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m. in the Dallas High School library. Everyone is welcome to attend, especially parents of juniors who would like to get involved with the committee for next year. Frances Slocum State Park nature camps The Youth Environmental Learning Series (YELS) will be conducted once more at Frances Slocum State Park. The programs are set to run from 9 a.m. until noon on the following dates: ages 4-5, June 14 to 16 or June 21 to 23; ages 6-8, June 28 to 30, July 6 to 8, or July 19 to 21; ages 9-11, July 26-28, August 2 to 4, or August 9to 11. ’ Registration is required. O’Hara’s project, which exam- ined the morphological differ- ences between hermit crab pop- ulations in New Jersey, was one of 48 projects chosen from more than 1,000 submitted. The Young Naturalist Awards is a program of the National Center for Science Literacy, Education and Technology, part of the Museum’s Department of Education. O’Hara, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles O'Hara of Dallas, is shown during the recent Sem Science Research Group Science Presentation. : Andrew O'Hara Disability champion, author to speak at College Misericordia commencement Brooke Ellison, author and motivational speaker, will be the guest speaker and receive an honorary degree at College Misericordia’s 79th annual com- mencement ceremony. Andrew J. Sordoni, ITI, president of the Sordoni = Foundation and Sordoni Construction Services, and Patrick J. Solano, retired senior counselor to the Governor of Pennsylvania, will also be presented with hon- orary degrees. Ellison was hit by a car in 1990 at the age of 11 while she was on her way home from school. The accident left her paralyzed from the neck down and ventilator-dependent. Despite her physical situation, she was determined to continue with her life. Her accomplish- ments include honors in poetry, science, math and literature. Her most notable achievement occurred in 2000, when she graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and gave a commencement address to her class. She graduated with an A- average in cognitive neu- roscience, a combined major of psychology and biology.. The book was made into a movie, directed by Christopher Reeve. Brooke, now 26, has also graduated from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government with a master’s degree in public policy and is currently a Ph.D. student in political science at Stony Brook University. In addition to her school work, Brooke has continued to write and works as a motiva- tional speaker, hoping to use her experiences to help others.
