3 The Dallas Post NEWS Sunday, April 24, 2005 By RONALD BARTIZEK Post Staff HARVEYS LAKE — Denise Sult is a queen. She appointed herself, and that’s okay with her subjects. Sult is the inspiration behind the Harveys Lake chapter of the Red Hat Society. She and several members came to the April 19 meeting of the borough council to hear Mayor Richard Boice proclaim Monday “Red Hat Society Day,” celebrating the anniversary of the organization’s founding. Started in 1998, the society recently reached one million members around popular. Her chapter, named “The Lovely Ladies of the Lake,” started last November and has 25 members. While the society is designed most- ly for fun, the “Ladies” brightened Saturday for residents of Lakeside Nursing Center by holding a tea there. About that royal designation. The society encourages women who found chapters to give themselves an exalt- ed title. Queen Mother is the most And of course the society’s name comes from the distinctive headwear they don for their get-togethers, along with purple clothing. Welcome to the place where there is fun after fifty (and before) for women of all walks of life. We believe silliness is the comedy relief of life and, since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next. ‘Lovely Ladies’ brighten council meeting Mary Louise Evans held one of the miniature hats that were used as table decorations during a tea for residents of Lakeside Nursing Center. She discussed plans for the event as she waited with Denise Sult as they waited outside the Harveys Lake Municipal building. CIRCUS '! HARVEYS LAKE Continued from Page 1 was made to provide infor- mation that was not necessary on a form used only for demoli- tion of a building. Solicitor Charles McCormick sent a letter to the firm on March 17, starting a 180-day notice of termination that was available to either party. West said the borough will begin interviewing other firms with the same capabilities, including Building Inspection Underwriters, which works with several nearby communi- ties. The council voted to suspend renovation work at the recre- ation center until the reason is found for large electrical serv- ice bills. The center is closed over the winter and the elec- tricity supposedly turned off, but the borough was billed $188 and $118 for two months service. Daniel Blaine, chairman of the recreation committee, asked if material already pur- chased could be put to use. The motion that passed reads, “no further borough money should be spent.” Point Breeze resident Irene Brislin told the council that raw sewage spewed from a manhole near her property during the most recent heavy storms. “There was still fecal matter. It was just disgusting.” Brislin said she drove around the lake during the storm, and was pleased to see that only three manholes had opened up, one at Sandy Bottom, another near Pole 237 and the one in front of her property. She asked that the authority make fixing that one a priority. “This is on my property now,” Brislin said of the overflow, and she won't feel comfortable until her soil is tested for contamina- tion. After the water leaves her property, she said it runs direct- ly into the lake. Later in the meeting, Blaine, liaison to the authority, said the borough crew had found 35 leaky manhole covers between the Alderson and Sunset sec- tions of the lake. Also, the Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority brought out its spe- cial cameras to check the main line at Baird Street and found two leaks. “That was a great help to the borough,” Blaine said. “I think that things are moving in the right direction.” The authority is awaiting word from the state Department of Environmental Protection on its plan to correct the overflows. Until that is approved, there is a moratori- um on new connections.
