The Dallas Post SPORTS Sunday, March 13, 2005 DALLAS YOUTH BASKETBALL 8TH GRADE TOURNAMENT TEAM Dallas wins Solomon League Dallas 8th grade won the championship game in the Solomon League, defeating Crestwood 36-26. Steve Meskers led Dallas with 10 points, followed by Josh Backes with eight, Jack Ellis with six and Tommy Youells with five. Scott Skammer chipped in three points, while Brian Haughwout and Ryan Urzen added two points each for the champions. Great rebounding by Scott Gallup and Henry Messinger. Dallas 8th grade is coached by Clyde Backes and Steve Skammer. DYB TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP 8TH GRADE Dallas 50, Valley West 45 Josh Backes scored 13 points and Scott Gallup added 11 as the DYB 8th grade boys tournament team narrowly defeated Valley West 50-45 to win the championship. Henry Messinger and Brian Haughwout added three each. Dallas finished pool play unbeaten as they earlier defeated Northwest 53-25 behind 14 points from Jackie Ellis and eight from Scott Skammer. The 8th graders defeated Valley West earlier in the tournament 50-36 behind 17 points from Josh Backes and 12 from Steven Meskers, and they also outclassed Lehman 67-28 as Tommy Youells dominated with 17 points and Ryan Urzen added four. Valley West reached the final by running by Lehman 48-32 and by defeating Northwest 61-25. 7TH GRADE Abington Heights 63, Dallas 45 Abington Heights won the division by topping Dallas 63- 45 in the title game. Chris Dailey had 12 points for DYB while Jimmy Brown added nine. Dallas reached the final by defeating Northwest 54-27. Tyler Patton had 11 points and D.J. Berley eight, While Ryan McAndrew and Joey Murray added six each. Abington also topped Dallas 70-25 in a pool-play game. Chris Ellis had 11 points for DYB and Hunter Englehart six. Abington also defeated Northwest and Newport to finish unbeaten. 5TH GRADE South Wilkes-Barre 29, Dallas 17 South Wilkes-Barre won the 5th grade division by edging Dallas, 29-17. Devin Taylor scored 11 points for DYB while Bobby Saba added four and Shane Dunn had several key steals. Dallas topped Valley West 4th 46-14 behind 12 points from Jordan Stephens and eight from Paul Brace. Donnie Behm added six and Aaron Weir two. The 5th graders also topped Lehman 38-19 behind 12 points frm Devin Taylor and four from Shane Dunn. 4TH/S5TH GRADE DYB 5th 29, DYB 4th 12 Aleax Zubko scored six points and Jason Schilling four as the 5th graders defeated the DYB 4th grade tournament team 29-12. Greg Petorak had two points for the 4th graders and Michael Gallis led the defense. Chad DeBona had sev- eral key steals. 4TH GRADE Dallas 31, Valley West 7 The 4th grade team won their first DYB tournament game over Valley West, 31-7. Jason Simonovich led the way with 10 points and Brian Stepniak added eight. Danny Saba had six points. The 4th graders also defeated Lehman 29-24 behind six points from John Murray and five from Ryan Zapoticky. Other games saw South Wilkes- Barre defeat Gate of Heaven 38- 31 and Gate of Heaven edge Valley West 32-23. Lehman topped Valley West and Gate of Heaven defeated Newport. 3RD & 4TH GRADE GIRLS PLAYOFFS FINALS Fieldhouse 25, Eastern Penn 8 Sydney Myers led her team to victory, scoring 22 points. Michelle Thompson con- tributed two while Nell Adams contributed one. The defense was led by Alyssah Dombek and Jenna Morgan. Scoring for Eastern Penn were Stephanie Cybulski, Ashley Dunbar, Bridget Boyle, and Laura DeWitt, each with two points. Kelly Anderson and Samantha Zimniski played strong defense. SEMIFINALS Eastern Penn 18, Integrated Power 10 Ashley Dunbar led Eastern Penn with 16 points. Contributing two points was Brittney DeArmitt. Laura DeWitt, Samantha Zimniski, and Bridget Boyle played strong defense. Tanner Englehart led Integrated Power with 10 points. Jennifer Cave, Brooke Shotwell, and Taylor Kelley played good defense. Fieldhouse 25, Philadelphia Hair 6 Sydney Myers was top scorer for her team with 10 points, fol- lowed by Michelle Thompson with seven. Other scorers for Fieldhouse were Nell Adams and Shelby Gumble. Kelly Jacobs and Madison Ziemba led the defense. Kayla Gleco and Morgan Gilhooley contributed two points each for Philadelphia Hair, while Brittany Harris and Jennifer Yanuzzi each scored one. Gordon Smith Ins. 40, Dallas Lions 25 In the other semifinal, Jason Simonovich was unstoppable with 28 points as Gordon-Smith Insurance ran away from Dallas Lions. Michael Boland had six points and Michael Mazula two, while David Pomfret played strong defense. Kyle Razawich scored 17 points for the Lions, John Murray added six and David Lasco two.
