The Diocese of Scranton Scholarship Foundation is pro- viding tuition assistance for eligible families whose chil- dren are enrolled in pre-kinder- garten programs, which are operated within 30 diocesan elementary schools. The scholarships are a new component of Pennsylvania's Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program, which allows corporations and busi- nesses to earn state tax credits by contributing to organiza- tions such as the Diocese of Scranton Scholarship Foundation. PNC Bank is among a num- ber of area corporations that have supported the Scholarship Foundation since its inception three years ago. Most recently, PNC donated $55,000 for tuition assistance in diocesan programs. Overall, more than 3,000 stu- dents in grades K-12 have received awards over the past three years through the Scholarship Foundation. This was made possible by the con- tributions of nearly 60 local companies. Donations to the Scholarship Foundation have now surpassed $4 million, including nearly $930,000 for the 2005/2006 school year. Families must submit an application to be considered for tuition assistance. The applications are evaluated by the Private School Aid Service (PSAS), a Lakewood, Ohio company that specializes in financial aid programs. Pre-K awards will be $300 per child. Families will be ranked by financial need with- in the school and the awards will be considered separately from the K-12 awards; thus, a family not awarded a K-12 award may still be eligible to receive an award for their pre- K student. The application deadline is April 15 and the application fee to PSAS is $19 for processing. Applications may be returned to PSAS directly or to the school to be forwarded -to PSAS. Information regarding dona- tions to the pre-K or K-12 tax credit program may be received by calling the Diocese of Scranton Scholarship Foundation at 207-2250.
