Staff report PLYMOUTH — Bishop O'Reilly junior center Josh Aciukewicz teamed with senior guard Tim Crossin to lead Bishop O'Reilly to an impressive 58-48 victory over host Wyoming Valley West in the championship game of the Crossin Tournament. Dallas captured third place with a 62-42 victory over Lake-Lehman in the consolation game. Aciukewicz, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, scored a game-high 23 points and Crossin tallied 14 points for the Queensmen. “Josh works hard, and it showed tonight,” said O'Reilly coach Mark Belenski, who is usually reluctant to talk about individual players. “He was like the Energizer Bunny. He just kept us going and going and ...” The Spartans were in control most of the first half, racing out to a 24-10 lead midway through the second quarter. Crossin’s three-point play cut the margin to 24-16 with 1:36 left in the second. O'Reilly drew to within 24-21 at halftime on five consecutive points by Chris Kester. Then, Aciukewicz took over. The 6-foot-5 junior scored the first five points of the second half, giv- ing O'Reilly a 26-24 lead, which it never relinquished. Aciukewicz scored at will, inside the paint and from the perimeter. He was unstoppable, despite being pounded on all night by Valley West's 6-6, 275-pound-center Kurt Mattes. “It was a very physical game,” Aciukewicz said. “Mattes is a real- ly tough player.” Aciukewicz’ most impressive play was a riveting, left-handed dunk late in the third quarter that gave the Queensmen a 35-33 lead after receiving a circus pass from Crossin. “Sometimes Timmy’s passing is crazy,” Aciukewicz said. “You don’t know where he’s going to throw the ball.” O'Reilly (9-1) took a 43-33 lead on Aciukewicz’ three-point play to begin the fourth quarter, but the Spartans hung tough. They cut the lead to 44-41 on a trey by Jason Mikus with 5:07 remaining. However, the Queensmen surged ahead 47-41 on a long-range three by Aciukewicz.
